Watercolor portrait study

I didn’t plan on using these brushes at first, but i have to admit that in the process they quickly carried me away.
So here we are. I don’t think that it looks quite like a watercolor painting (I don’t really know what a watercolor painting looks like ) but I kinda like it.

I thought the result was great. At first glance I thought it was natural media. In other words, my look was deceived. This is also due to your drawing / painting skills. Do more!
(thanks for sharing the reference too)

Looks not bad, pay more attention to anatomy. This model is great, so try harder but with the same speed

I agree with mmiller, do more :+1:t2:
Be it for anatomy be it for the watercolor effect

Can you maybe point out what’s wrong with anatomy? I know that the jawline is wrong in multiple different ways. I only noticed it when it was too late to fix lol

Looks good. More like a caricature which is nice.

Admitted, there are strong curves in the model - the nose influences the whole skull to curve even more,
This is easy to correct, and don’t forget to add more back head.

You can try to overlap your reference and turn down opacity a little bit, if you wanna know the exact placement of lines

I see. Sometimes when energy of the whole picture really captivates me I focus on it and don’t care all that much about nailing the exact anatomy. This was exactly the case.
I’m always scared that adding too much anatomy will make gesture awfully stiff, I often suffer from this.

You’re right.

I prefer more realism over caricature because deformation is easier to archive than nice realism, but your goals might vary

Drawing is key, if you do this painting will be a breeze

I disagree that caricatures are easier. Caricatures are hard to get right especially the likeness.

I agree to some point, but if you’ve a good routine it is “easier”

At the end it depends a lot of your personal inclination if you enjoy more caricature or realism.

Everything you force will come out stiff be it realism or caricature.

Interesting to see how watercolor brushes are used in pictures with different style than classic watercolor. I like the result.
