What are some good resources for learning how to use Krita for sketching and painting

Hey I’m Enkidu I’m new to painting and drawing. I like to make sketches in my free time and downtime at work, and want to begin learning how to draw and paint characters and objects for the novels I’m writing.

I’ve recently gotten a Wacom Intuos tablet and am beginning my digital art journey on my Surface Go with Majaro as my operating system, and I’m surprised by how second-nature the hand-eye coordination became, it was almost instant!

I made this painting of this apple-ish-thing using, if I remember correctly, the Adjust Multiply brush for blocking, and largely the Airbrush Soft for the rest. And the Blender Blur (the Q-Tip) for smoothing the edges where I made some blunders and to also make it look more smooth. And the fill tool for the background.

The problem I run into is, I don’t know how most of the tools work, and I’m still trying to learn what my style will be. Whether to just, make paintings without linework, or to make the sketches first, and then fill them in with painting, and what’s the best way to go about it, and how to use and manipulate layers.

Part of the reason I used the blender tool is because I didn’t know how to select specific objects in a layer and move them to another layer. Took me about half an hour to learn how to do it, and then the table and apple looked like a cutout

Me personally, I want to get as close to the traditional experience of working with physical material as possible. So, only two layers: The canvas, and then everything that goes on the canvas.

I was wondering, what are some good courses or YouTubers for learning sketching and linework, as well as painting, in Krita? Who specializes in working with just one layer? Or is that needless handicapping?

Dear Enkidu282,

This platform offers a wealth of information; however, I find its navigational structure somewhat complex.

Its likely my perception might stem from my being a newbie to the site.

On a separate note, Ive found Ramons’ contributions to be really valuable and relatively easy to understand

Thankyou Ramon :slightly_smiling_face:

I think He hangs out here and also on YouTube

Hi @Enkidu282

Learning to draw and learning to use Krita are two different skills. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to make both good and bad art. It’s all valuable.

As for me, I treat Krita as I would traditional media (traditional media is my background). So, I don’t use that many layers (I think the most I have done was about 5 or so.) I don’t do anything fancy, I just choose the colors I want and paint. I do usually do a sketch first on the bottom most layer, then add the next layer and paint that in. I don’t always make all my smudging and blending smooth, sometimes it’s more appealing to see the brush strokes. … If there’s any corrections that I need to do, I will add a layer, do the corrections on that, use the tool that turns the layer on and off (visible and hides) to check if I like it, then I’ll merge that layer down. … With digital painting, the fewer layers the better (I’ve seen and heard of many who have lots of layers and modes and their devices can’t handle it, then they lose all their work. So I try to avoid that problem by using as few layers as possible. )

Anyway, just have fun and save often!
