What does Saturation setting is actualy doing?

Hey all! I just realise that saturation setting is affecting values.

Considering the commun definition of saturation I guess it should not.
but;

It seam’s that’s also the case in Photoshop so I suppose there is a good reason I don’t understand.

So please, can someone explain to me what Saturation setting is actualy doing? and why?
Thank you for your time.

It depends how you do it and how you measure it. If you use the ‘Select A Colour’ tool that is activated by clicking on one of the FG/BG colours on the Toolbar, you can specify a colour by typing its HSV number then paint with that colour.
Here it is shown with H = 0, S = variable, V = 70%.

If you then increase the saturation of the image with the HSV Adjustment filter with Type = Hue/Saturation/Value, the measured Value does not change over the image.
If you use Type = Hue/Saturation/Lightness then the measured Value does change over the image.

The interesting one is if you Desaturate the image then the only option that gives a ‘correct’ result of Value = 70% across the image is Desaturation method: = Max.

I think that whatever’s going on is quite complicated.

Hey AhabGreybeard! Thank you for taking time to answer.
Actualy I only access to TSV/TSL Adjustment and (maybe for that reason, I don’t know)
Type= Hue/Saturation/Value dont keep constant values.

Also; Desaturation method= max give the same result as Type= Hue/Saturation/Value => saturation-100

The only working method to get my value preserved seam to be this one;

And I don’t even know how to save it.

I have no idea why all this happens and the different HS(V/L/I/Y’) representations are a mystery to me.
I hope that someone who does understand it can provide a link to an article about it all.

This part of the conception of color in computers is quite technical and it look really hard to get information about it. I’ll wait with you for the legendary tech person who understands all those mysteries
Many thank’s for taking time.
