What monitors are digital artists using?

I’m considering the following: Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor - U2723QE
I use Applemacbook Pro.
Does anyone have any experience with this particular monitor?
There’s such a huge number of monitors available!
I am a hobby digital artist.
Thanks in advance.

Well a 1440p resolution and above is nice. I actually think 16:10 (aspect ratio) monitors might be better for art than 16:9. For more vertical space to work with.

I feel like this would be solid for my needs:

Ingnok 16inch Portable Monitor, Travel Monitor for Laptop with 1200P 16:10 320cd/m2 IPS 8Bit Screen, had HDMI USB C Compatible Laptop PC Phone PS4 Xbox and Switch (Silver)

Color accuracy and energy consumption would be other two things I’d look for.

I hear mini led are the latest advancement. OLED and IPS are also on higher end

The Dell U2723QE looks like a good choice to me.

Seems to have noticeable better contrast than “normal” IPS displays. Took me quite a while to accept that my IPS monitor just hasn’t such nice blacks like the PVA panel that had died, although I deliberately went away from PVA due to its annoying gamma shift.
Static contrast is more important to me for image editing than whatever HDR a monitor could offer instead.

Close to 100% P3 (with a decent pre-calibration, which seems to be the case) is also something I’d be looking for as hobby artist, so check.

The only thing missing for a great all-around display is variable refresh rate support. Plain 60Hz displays really should slowly become a thing of the past in my opinion (at that price point, anyway). But it looks like vendors still segment their products between gaming/multimedia and “content creator” monitors…I wouldn’t know of one that does all without costing an arm and a leg.

Other features like true 10-bit color (although 8-bit + FRC doesn’t seem that bad after all, and I just recently learned most of these HDR10 monitors actually accept 10-bit SDR signals too, but haven’t tried myself yet), convincing HDR etc. just can’t be had at that price or without other compromises, so I guess the Dell is a good pick.

I switched back zo 16:9 again since the the dockers of programs like Krita are stacked on the sides of the screen so giving more space to the canvas area on a whide screen. But I had to go bigger on screen size for it to make sense so I went for 27" 4K UHD. So I basically have a 16:10 inside my 16:9 in terms of UI spacing and also use canvas only mode a lot less since everything fits nicely on the screen at all times.

I’m also a hobbyist like yourself. I have been using this 15 inches MacBook Pro I got secondhand and it’s not a great experience. :joy: . Overall it’s great for studying, researching and experimentation here and there but not good for serious stuff. The last time I had a desktop computer was 10+ years ago. I can’t wait to find a spec and setup that will work for Krita and Blender for more serious artworks and experimentation.

I have a BenQ SW2700PT which has 99% adobe RGB and close to 100% SRGB and a BenQ Pd2700Q which has close to 100% SRGB both are calibrated with a xrite iDisplay pro.

both are 1440p I find this resoltuin really good for print design and illustration while being not too big which often makes the UI elements tiny

Thank you for your suggestion. I will look into this one.

Thank you for your thoughts Lynx3d - Still haven’t made my mind up though.

Thank you for responding The Scroll. I love my Macbook Pro and it works so well with Krita. I do travel a lot so perhaps a portable monitor could be considered.

Found a true 2k monitor that’s over $300 so it must be good. LG is a reputable company too.
