What's new in 5.2.3?

Sorry to ask about it here but where can I find what’s new in the new version?

That will be in the “Release Notes” on the homepage, but, and that is true at least for me, 5.2.3 isn’t officially released via Krita’s homepage. So you have to wait for the homepage updating, or maybe search up the source from where you got your leaked copy, if you got one.

we had some trouble with updating the website, but that’s up now.

The main changes are bugfixes, really.

Thanks. It’s Steam but I couldn’t find the latest release notes there, in the ‘News’, the latest update/patch notes being about the previous 5.2.2. version: “Krita 5.2.2 Bug Fix Patch Released”. Ok, then, I’ll wait for it to appear on the homepage.

I see, so nothing new. Thank you. I believe the Steam notes will be updated soon too.

No, we try to avoid putting features in socalled ‘patch’ releases. We use semantic versioning (sorta) so the first number changing (a ‘major’ version change) indicates a massive underlying change (qt framework update or complete rewrite of a core system, like animation or resources), the second number changing (a ‘minor’ version change) means new features but no massive core changes, and finally the third number (a ‘patch’ version change) means bugfixes, though we’ve also allowed extremely tiny features to get into point releases in the past, especially when we were uncertain when the next minor or major release would be.

Edit: So for example, the next version with features will likely be 5.3.0, and this will have new close gap fill tool features, as well as rewritten text tool. Before that, we’re likely to have a bugfix release, 5.2.4, containing more bugfixes. And the next major release is most likely going to be the port to Qt 6 framework, and will release as Krita 6.0

That’s very useful information for me. Thanks a lot.

Could it be that it was forgotten to sign the setup for Windows?

When I try to install it, I get the warning that is usual for unsigned apps, and this warning will make many computer illiterate people doubt Krita.
This is the first time I’ve seen this with Krita, and it should be clarified as soon as possible so as not to damage Krita’s reputation.

I think kacart has reported the same issue here: Is 5.2.3 actually released?
Since I use the Steam version, no problems here so far.

That may be. @kacart did you get the message like this (translation from German):

The computer was protected by Windows

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen has prevented the start of an unknown app. Running this app may pose a risk to the PC.

Yes that.

That happens if a file is unsigned, but VirusTotal claims it is clean, as I already suspected before scanning it, did scan it only to proof to others that the file is clean:

On my Samsung Android tablet, 5.2.3 is released through Google play store as the current update with a 6/26/24 effective date.

It had been tagged as beta, but now it seems to be equivalent to production and there are release notes available.

Here it is about the Windows setup-executable, not Android.

It turns out that the signing system errored out without us knowing :upside_down_face: , we’re looking into it.
