Where is photo exposure control

Hi.
I’ve left Photoshop and thought Krita would be a good replacement. It most probably is. I just can’t find and exposure adjustment tool for general, such as exposure, highlights and midtones. The documentation refers to something called Dodge which is supposed to do the trick. The problem is there is no such tool.

Most grateful for some hints.
Best regards
Erik

 Hello @ErikLe, and welcome to the forum!

Krita is only a software that has some functions that most raster-graphics software have because they manipulate pixels, it is even able to do a good job in many fields that are out of the domain of photo-manipulation software, but Krita is not and will very probably never be a PS replacement¹.
This means, you have to use workarounds for some tasks. I wanted to point this out first, that you have this information in mind when things do not work in the way you would expect from a photo-editor.

Now to your question, I’m not 100% sure, because I was a painter and did no photo manipulations, but I guess that you search the filters you’ll find via an RMB click on the layer you want to adjust, then go down to “Add” select “Add Filter Mask” and in the opening dialog choose “Adjust” >> “Color-Balance”.
It may be that you also want to take a look into the options found under “Colors” that is found some entries below “Adjust”.

excerpt out of the preface of Krita’s manual:

As you learn about Krita, keep in mind that it is not intended as a replacement for Photoshop.

Krita is not a photo editing tool, I’m not even sure it has the features you write about. Dodge is just a blending mode for layers and brushes.

Could the LUT Management docker be what you’re looking for?

It has an Exposure slider at least.

If you want to adjust values, there are several options for that e.g. filter>adjust>levels (ctrl+L)

If photo editing is your main focus you’ll probably find GIMP has more of the features you need.

If you want to process RAW photos there are a few open-source options. I usually use Darktable - https://www.darktable.org/

I could use some SIMPLE contrast adjusment tool for drawings - doesn’t Krita have one? (aside from autocontrast).

No. It seems odd but you can manage contrast trough other filters. See Adjust — Krita Manual 5.2.0 documentation

Hi folks,
Thank you very much for your responses!

I’m very impressed by Krita’s artistic features and will definitely start using it. However, Mythmaker is pp right that GIMP and Darktable are better suited for photo editing.

Thanks again!

The levels filter I mentioned above is simple enough once you get used to it.

I used to miss having a simple brightness/contrast filter, but I’ve long since adjusted to what’s available. The levels filter gives more control without too much complexity.

If you only want to adjust the lightness, then use HSV filter.

I think the cross-channel filter gives the most control, but I find it too complex for my needs.

It’s a similar situation when you want to sharpen something - there’s no simple slider filter, only an auto-sharpen which is too aggressive in most cases. But unsharp mask provides more control than a single slider, without being too complex.
