Where should I add shadows?

I started drawing this and I am almost done, but I still need to finish the hair and stuff. I am unsure where to add the shadows for the dress. I would also appreciate some feedback for the drawing, is it good?

That depends on where your light source is. If it is on the left side, put the shadows on the right side.

The drawing looks good. The shoes are inadequate for the terrain she’s in. Stiletto heels will just sink into the turf. I’ve seen it happen.

oh! good point. Idk why I didn’t think of that… I can add more grass to cover the shoes somewhat.

The shadow is on the top left. I added some shadow where her hair ends and shoulder starts (if you can see it) but Im not sure where to add the shadows on the dress. Like is it possible if you could please draw the places I could add the shadows? (where it wouldnt look too much).

Something like this maybe. Keep in mind that I don’t feel all that confident in my cloth drawing skills.

You had drawn the fold all the way up to her waist. I think you should allow the bum to fill up the dress a bit and let the fold begin below that.

What did you use for the shadowing?

b)_Basic-4_Flow_Opacity and a little bit with the soft airbrush tool.

How does this look? (its not as good as yours) but do the shadows look natural? or like, not out of place?

You should think of each fold as a shape of its own. It has a front side that gets hit by light rays and a backside that’s in shadow. Also, it casts shadow on the fold/s behind it.

I’ve tried to illustrate it here. Imagine that this is a dress seen from above:

Ok… I understand what you mean.

The more I start at the drawing the more the shadow placement looks weird… or it is just me? I’m not sure if the shadows look natural or good.

Your shadows look indecisive and blotchy. Don’t allow any brighter colour in the shadow area.

What color did you use for the shadowing?

Oh it’s just the same blue but darker. If you want the exact shade, use the eyedropper tool.

I’m using the airbrush to draw the shadows. would you suggest to use the blender_blur for blending it?

Sure, why not? If you use it to get smooth transitions.

I think it makes things a little too smooth, but that’s just a personal preference.

Don’t use a blend brush to get rid of blotches. All you’ll get is soft-edged blotches. Instead, use an ordinary brush to paint them out.

this is how the overall image looks like. Taking everything into consideration, I’m still not sure if it looks good…?

It’s still not as good as the one u drew

It’s getting better. I think you could be more careful when you paint. Go all the way to the line and don’t leave light colours where there should be dark and don’t paint dark where there should be light.

Some examples:

Time to sleep, good night!

Do you think I should leave the outline black? or should i color it? Like for the dress, instead of the black lines I could have a darker blue. And for her skin I can have the black lines a darker skin color. (I’m not sure if that makes sense…)

Or does black lineart look unprofessional?

That’s a matter of preference. They can all be made to look good.
