I can’t get Krita to open and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program a few times along with rebooting my computer with it installed and it still won’t let me open the program.
Whenever I try to open and run the program a window pops up that says “the program can’t start because of the 'api-ms-win-crt-string-l1-1-0.dll is missing from my computer”, but I just reset thing computer and I really want this program to run on here.
- What version of windows are you using? and 32bit or 64 bit?
- Did you download from the website or via a store like steam?
- Have you tried googling for: api-ms-win-crt-string-l1-1-0.dll is missing
There seems plenty of solutions for that issue on google.
Feed Google with exact this string and download and install this DLL-File according to the instructions shipped with that download (okay, sometimes these instructions are on the website which hosts it.), after that you can install Krita.

64bit, but download them both to see if one would work over the other and they both said the same thing. Windows 8.1 is what is on my laptop. I already googled it and ran a system to fix that and then reinstalled and it still said that it was missing.
You downloaded the dlls, placed them in their proper folder and it continues to give you the error? Also, you only need the 64bit one, not the 32bit one.
This might be true for your system too:
In your case I would try to update Windows through:
Start > Settings > Update and Security (or similarly). Then I would do a restart.
Afterwards I would give the Krita installation another try. If you then still get that error about the same missing .dll file I would use the link from above and update the Universal C Runtime as described under “Method 2”.
Since you mentioned that you run a 64bit System you probably should download the second package under “Method 2” (reckeck/proof!).
I did that, I downloaded one and it didn’t work so I uninstalled it and download the other to see if that one would work and it didn’t.
Try putting it in the same directory as the exe and see if that helps if it still isn’t fixed.
What exactly did not work?
The update of the C Runtime Environment or the Krita installation or the Windows update?
What error/failure message did you get?
It is most probably not sufficient to just download the .dll file from somethere. You need to run an installation package from that Microsoft source I posted before.
