Windows 11 was a mistake? 🤔

Hello again, lovely Krita community! :sparkling_heart::heartpulse::sparkling_heart:

I have been keeping quiet for years, mostly because I had no issues with Krita!~✨
However, all this time, i have been using Windows 10… and now, when i upgraded to Windows 11, everything started LAGGING like crazy!

My question is: Has anybody else had this issue? Is there a specific fix for Windows 11 (or windows users) that i don’t know about? I would really appreciate any feedback and advice! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::sparkling_heart:

Device info: :desktop_computer::computer_mouse::fountain_pen:
I’ve had the same machine for 4 years now, but it was brand new with the Windows 10 software at first. Nowadays, after trying a few new OS (Linux experimentation) and then going back to Win10, Krita was working fine (even with big files, canvas 2000px+)… Now i went on Win11 and stuff started lagging :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Even before i started tweaking the newly installed program, it was kinda… slow. I have tried a few methods of getting it up to speed (Bilinear Filtering & turning off the texture buffer) - and it did get a bit faster, but just a little. Most lags happen during colorpicking, mirroring the canvas and changing the brush size, so the usual stuff.

My computer RAM is sufficient, so that’s not causing the problem!
My Krita version is 5.13 if i remember correctly~

Once again, I would appreciate any & all advice! Thanks for reading! :crescent_moon::blush:

Hey @Drl welcome back.

Are the drivers installed properly. Have you double checked if all the hardware is supported under windows 11? Which version of krita are you using? And check if hardware acceleration is on in it. I am just trying to guess what is wrong. May be other windows users who have upgraded might help. I think @kacart updated recently?

All my drivers are installed properly, but i’m using Krita 5.1.3. ~✨
I am one version behind everyone, is that the issue?

I just checked the acceleration thingy, and no, it was turned off actually! In fact, Krita doesn’t even show up when i try to check Windows “Apps” in settings  (maybe i should look into the Microsoft Store version of the app… although that version isn’t the best one. I will check if it’s less laggy)

I will look around these settings/program versions, maybe something will change! Thank you for your ideas!:sparkling_heart:

In the krita settings hardware acceleration should be turned on. Otherwise the canvas rendering will be laggy

Is it ok if I ask how much RAM you have?

You might be quite knowledgeable but I’ve encountered users who don’t have a good understanding of how much RAM we need for Krita and how much is used up by the Windows operating system (not to mention running a browser at the same time).

The problem I had with lagging had to do with the processor (Intel i9) I believe or perhaps the graphics … in any case I had to change the Renderer to Open GL … in Settings … Display Renderer…
That fixed my lagging issue.

Alrighty, my Windows says it has “Installed RAM - 16,0 GB (15,9 GB usable)”
Looking at the Krita performance settings however, it says that the memory available is 16,235 MiB? also the memory limit slider is on 50%, so maybe i should do something about that as well? (I handle bigger files, closer to A4 format for printing… maybe that’s the issue )

About the browser, my computer used to handle Krita fine with the browser in Windows 10… Krita used to be the one overtaking all the RAM, making the browser slower! If there is any priority setting for RAM, I would gladly give Krita priority
Looking at Windows 11 though, without anything else open, Krita seems a bit faster, so that’s one way to go~✨

16 GB of RAM is good. Thanks for sharing that.

I just reread your initial post and wonder if there is a clue in this line:

Can you write out the steps you take for each of these? Example: color sampler = ctrl+click.

You might have a system conflict with key bindings.

After changing the memory %, adjusting the rendering engine, closing off all my background processes + re-downloading Krita, bringing my shortcuts to default seemed to fix the rest of the lagging! I guess my .shortcut file was either corrupted, or i somehow botched them up when i was transferring :face_with_spiral_eyes::face_with_spiral_eyes::face_with_spiral_eyes:

Thank you very much for your assistance! :sparkling_heart::sparkles::sparkles::sparkles::sparkling_heart:
