For the past couple of days I’ve been looking for either a preformatted font, or a method for creating the effect of wood burning engraving. I wanted a section of text that looked like it had been engraved into wood with a hot iron, or similar tool. There are a number of online descriptions on how to accomplish this in photoshop, and gimp, using filters and tools included in those programs. I was actually able to grunt out something similar in gimp but it was a lot of hoops to jump through. My Krita method took hardly no effort. I thought I’d pass my method along in case someone is looking for it. If there’s a better, or alternate, method I’d love to know. Here’s what I did:
I found a wood texture background photo. Lighter wood works better. That’s the bottom layer. I created the text using a font (pick one). I chose a dark brown color. I converted it as a flattened layer. I duplicated that layer. On the bottom text layer I added a blur filter. Adjusted it so it looked like burn trace around the upper text layer. Boom. Done. Those simple steps got me close enough to what I was looking for. If I wanted to spend more time, I might have chosen a better font type, maybe blurred the upper font layer a bit just to take the sharp edges off. Maybe even played around with lighting effects to make it more 3D (more depth). I guess this would work with any line type drawing. End by merging the two layers. Hope this helps.

Thank you for explaining a simple and easy way to get the effect.
You could add ‘sophistication’ by using the original wood texture to overlay a grain pattern on the text but if you go down that road then you could get lost in ‘fancy effects’ that you think up.
Simple is often the best.
I’m wondering, is ‘Hue Man Publishing’ related to ‘Hue Man Books’ which is an organisation that publishes and sells books and has a website for those activities?
Ah ha lol it figures. I’ve been using the term “hue man” on my facebook profile for a number of years now - reference to my art hobby. It was just a silly expression. I’m currently working on the covers for an illustrated story I’ve been working on. Plan was to get some copies printed up and make it look fancy. There’s no actual business entity called Hue Man Publishing… although… if it went far enough there would be. I’m not sure if that name would infringe, but it likely would… cause embarrassment. This conversation is proof enough it could lead to trouble. It would be like if I started a restaurant and called it McDonalds Pancake House. I’m sure McDonalds would come knocking lol I’ll find another name to use but thanks for the warning!
ps: I was then thinking what about Hue Jackson but there’s a football coach with that name. lol
pss: wait! I think I have one. Hue and Cry Publishing. A “hue and cry” is a loud public outcry, clamor, or protest regarding a matter. Originating in 13th-century English law as a legal mandate to raise a shout and pursue a criminal, it now generally refers to widespread complaints, uproar, or uproar raised against an action, decision, or event.
Nearly a perfect idea. Art as a revolution or protest. I love it. I think lol
