You can find me almost everywhere as @yartydesign
Yooo these look awesome! Love the Star Wars going on!
I appreciate that, @smeep. I love Star Wars too!
This is one of the 100 Faces challenges I’d never posted. I have the processes recorded, which I hope to publish someday. I’ll be sharing them eventually.

Back to face studies, but focusing more on color this time. I still feel like something is missing, but I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. The pale face was a struggle haha :,D
More color studies, applying different techniques. I still have a long way to go to improve the way I want to; I just need to find a formula. In the first sketch, I used some default Krita brushes that are like markers, but it didn’t quite feel right, so I had to modify a brush. I ended up feeling comfortable with it, but I’ll have to figure out how to create my own. I probably just need to practice more and more.
I’ve added studying dark and pale skin tones to my mental to-do list; I find it really difficult to paint skin that isn’t tan.
I’ve recently been working on a deeply personal illustration about the earthquakes in my home country, Venezuela. To be honest, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to finish it because of how heavy the emotional weight is. My main goal is to turn it into a simple animation for social media largely as a way to remind people not to forget what happened. We’ll see if I can get to the finish line; it’s hitting a bit close to home.
I’m riding this wave of inspiration and creating a bunch of study pieces! I want to squeeze in as much practice as possible while giving my characters distinct personalities.
For this one, I just need to add color and remove that makeup it ended up looking a bit like a jester, which actually sparked the idea to create a full jester character!
I’m currently drawing them right now, thinking of going with a red and green color palette. Let’s see how it turns out!
Starting in black and white is honestly the best way to avoid stressing over color early on. Getting the lighting and shadows down first makes character design way smoother after that, it’s just throwing on some gradient maps and wrestling with the colors!
Naturally, I used plenty of references for this illustration. I even got my dad to pose so I could get the hand reference right, hahah.
It took most of my day, but active drawing time was probably around 4 hours. Should have it finished in a few days!
Most drawings take longer than they should.
But that’s okay! It means you’re having fun.
Thanks a lot, DragonScales! I definitely catch myself comparing my work to amazing artists sometimes, but you’re totally right it’s best to just trust the journey and enjoy it. Everyone moves at their own pace
This is a really good drawing. I usually prefer to work in black and white first too, but sometimes I just want to play with colour immediately.
Is that you on Facebook with the colourful Y logo on a black background?
Thank you! I prefer that too! When you go straight to color, does it take longer to finish your drawings?
Haha yeah, that’s me! I’ve practically forgotten about that account
When I start with colour, it is usually with some kind of paint emulation. Memilio’s oils are my favourite for this type of experimentation. I think it takes me longer because I play more than I construct and the results usually have colours that are too bright and not enough contrast. It’s much better for me to start in black and white and get the values right before adding colour.
Those brushes are amazing! They give the artwork such a realistic, traditional look
