Young Escherstein!

Here’s my mashup homage to Young Frankenstein and M.C. Escher’s print, Relativity, I had to get this one out of my system before doing the version that’s a more direct homage to Escher’s original print–watching all the old Universal stuff to get ideas (and YF itself) had me wanting to do an homage to the lighting of those movies. I just love the way they looked!

@Smeep Thanks very much!

@Elixiah Thank you!!

So much to look at. Not only the complex architecture, but also the emotion and interaction of the characters amaze me. Well done! :star_struck:

@TaleOfACat Thank you! In a way I was disappointed that the characters had to be so small relative to the overall image because I really had fun drawing the individual situations but I’m glad they’re still clear enough to add their own level of interest.

@ARandhahn Thanks very much!

very clever! Looks like a LOT of work. Can you share the original dimensions you worked in?

@GreyWolf Thank you! The image dimensions are 3600px x 3600px @ 300 ppi. I did relatively tight sketches of all of the characters at 1080px x 1080 px and then scaled them into the final layout.

How long did you spend to draw the whole thing from scratch?

@novames00 I’m glad you asked because I didn’t know myself! It was almost exactly 2 months. This was the first image I made on July 17:

And the final was completed on September 18.

How do you handle distance unit in perspective?

@novames00 That was one of the big differences in this one compared to the one I’d done previously in Illustrator (an homage to Star Trek, Star Wars and Alien–you can see it here:

With that one, I tried to keep the units consistent and I don’t think it was as successful because with this kind of perspective grid, things start to recede in an extreme way at the edges as soon as you leave the center, so the whole composition felt like it was disappearing off the sides. I totally cheated on this one, essentially keeping the characters to the same size throughout and freely drawing the structure around them to suit their size.
