3D Model Male (wip)

Work in progress for my 3d model assistant proposal. Since I will be doing this as a side quest this thread will help me keep focus and since it does not concern me and just my view will help check if my path is correct to the goal. Sometimes another set of eyes can help you see what you were not seeing. Also thread wise it is not just me spamming for no reason in the middle of the conversation.

This thread is a by-product of : Digital doll/puppet model thread

Process:
The process will be me making sections of the doll in pieces for the modeling phase. Then at the end I will push everything together like assembling a lego and make sure all is looking good. Then I will do stuff related with animation that only playing with the controls will make sense.

So I decided to make some heads first. There are quite some I think I need to make following the thread discussion.

  • Loomis head
  • Manga head
  • Asaro head

Redid the previous 2 heads today since they seemed a bit off. they seem a bit more harmonious.

Loomis head :
loomis head

Manga head :
manga head

If I seem to be using bad references just send stuff my way so I can check it out.
I will keep making stuff mostly on weekends probably.

Nice models :+1:

I am just asking for suggestions here. Does this post belong to tutorial and resource category or lounge category. Since it is a resource for people here, but it is not done in Krita. I am confused :slight_smile:

Honestly I don’t even know but I am good where ever you come to place it. This is just so I don’t come up with a bad surprise all of the sudden.

They look good! For the Loomis head, some way to mark the centerline/browline might be good - from some angles it becomes a little hard to guess where things go with foreshortening etc. when there are no facial features indicated. A texture would be simplest. I noticed this with the UE mannequin I’m currently using.

The plan was to use a texture for that yes. For now it only has a little indent on the chin.

But it is still not time to unwrap it. I took a peek at CSP doll and it had those markings all over so I had my sights on that. Also the blender one had it but had a interesting display with grease pencil over it.

But I have been considering if geo would not be better too.

manga head 2

I still don’t like it. and I still don’t know why.

Judging from the animation, for a manga head, the brow/nose ridge might be too pronounced. Lowering the height of the jaw and/or placing the bottom of the ears lower (or making the ears bigger) in proportion to the bottom of the nose might also be something to consider.

From personal observations:

I noticed two major categories, semi-realistic and more manga/simplified. There are manga with realistic styles which would benefit more from asaro head etc. If it makes it easier, you can label this one semi-realistic.

Is there a certain style you’re going for? Maybe manga is too broad of a category. You can narrow it down by manga ā€˜genre’ (targeted audience). The manga style is very flexible :grinning: and the one you created certainly fits.

Looking forward to seeing your adjustments on this head and other models!

This was strange. well seeing your comments really helped me see my issue with it. Even though the form indicates a certain topology in truth the topology is alot diferent from other heads since it is over simplified. This because despite artist having their own take on it the shape they depict is not similar to the western heads like in comics… yes this is strange they dont see the head like the loomis head but more like a egg shape that is upside down? And this might be even more wild but the older the character gets the longer the chin and artist style influences the pointyness. And if they are very young the eyes are bigger and more apart that is known. But the chin size indicating how old they are never occured to me before.

topology
topology
this chin for me is blasphemy…

However it seems to come out better simply ignoring hard edges of real life western chins and make it all round because if you really look at asian people their chin are much softer, and with this weird shape you get the small dent when tilting the head at 3/4s too that seems an artistic choice but not as much so.

@tom does it look better now? I simplified the shape alot but that hardness was my trying to nail a real manga drawing and then eliminating key features. I think it might be a very bad choice.

@anon62843690 yes I did notice something of the sort (realistic and simplified) when I was in pintrest thinking about this. After I saw your comment I was thinking i did not want it to have a style I don’t want to favor a style but to have a blank canvas to accept the line over it. so it does not really matter where the hard edge is but where the limit of the shape is. I think my issue was to ignore young characters when trying to make a man character not thinking they all have the same shape in reality. or, it seems like it is. so I saw a image of Bulma and hit me I looked at real asian people and the topology seemed to match to manga :exploding_head:

Honestly I like this one the most so if I change will be a edit to this one probably.

I was looking for some references for the Asaro head and I arrived at this website… :grimacing:
https://www.planesofthehead.com/index.php

Looking at this I got a weird feeling, this is being sold currently by the maker? not to mention he is still alive by the looks of it. I did find it strange a guy that made a Asaro head in sketchfab and not selling it despite people begging him to sell it. And Amazon also not selling it.

This does not look like it is in the public domain to be replicated… Unless somehow I can see it is not copyrighted I will avoid doing this model.

Very good point - I had thought it was much older, but I guess the Asaro head is not an option.

@EyeOdin
Yeah, this guy sells it worldwide, indeed. But why you can’t ask him by email? :o:

I remember another guy used Asaro’s head here, so it is used somewhere else and maybe not illegally - this is not so new place.
Asaro head is great to study the planes of the human head and to memorise the main parts.

@Drayldan hmm no!!!

I really don’t care how good it is, what do you want me to say even?
ā€œhey why don’t you let me make a 3d mesh of your main seller of your store so everyone in the world can have it for free forever to all your potential clients just with a click?ā€ sounds like a ā€œnoā€ from him to me.

one stl after hacking Krita and anyone in the world with a 3d printer could make it for themselves or sell it on the side and literally void his business and that is a clear copyright offense.

that thing on artstation is borderline illegal too. Unlike that dude on artstation that is walking on thin ice until someone notices it, Krita has a sort of distribution to users and that can be calculated how much he lost in sales and held accountable on that amount. Also not nice to ask people to do shady behavior because it suits you just because. You can do your own sculpts and use them for your personal work.

This will be Krita property if accepted. I don’t want other programs to rip this off and abuse it. Because I know everyone will. talking about that… Probably the google drive link was a bad idea. I don’t want to end up making something possibly nice and then CSP or PS just waltz their way in and copyright it under Krita’s nose. I have stopped making content because of stuff like that before.

@EyeOdin
All right man, easy. You are very experienced user and programmer so do as you want… and I don’t want to impose anything on you!
Even if you code fancy plugin that contains only Loomis’ and manga heads it will be fine. :slight_smile: Krita needs this type of thing for sure.

And as for Asaro’s head, I’m gonna buy one in future from that guy who sells it, of course. It is independent of what is written here or there. :wink: :sunglasses: :slight_smile: :laughing:
