I am using writing-mode: vertical-rl but it does not wrap lines.
Am I doing something wrong?
It is still quite troublesome to input vertical text now.
Will there be a button to execute this directly in the future?
thanks
Hello @zz_j_6 and welcome to the forum!
Have you tried this with the recent release version Krita 5.2.2 or did you try it using the Krita Next nighties, so the 5.3.0 versions?
Because, if you choose the latter, then it works flawlessly for me. To use the nightlies for these special tasks is probably the better option at the moment, because there you get all the additions made to Krita’s Text Tool, which is currently rewritten, and a working word wrap for vertical RTL is one of the things you’ll get.
Unfortunately, you whether named your version of Krita nor the operating system you use, so I can only give you this link where you have to select your OS first before you can choose the file to download, for Windows and Linux use the lower/the lowest option:
https://cdn.kde.org/ci-builds/graphics/krita/master/
You must give execution permissions to the Linux AppImage before you can run it.
The Windows version is a portable version, extract the archive to a folder you have read and write access to. Inside the unzipped folder you find 3 links, choose the one named krita.lnk
to execute Krita, it will use the same settings as your current installation.

Thank you for your response.
I will try it out later.
If I use Krita Next nightlies,
will my .kra files still open correctly in the official release of version 5.3 in the future?
Thank you.
Yes, they will.
Michelist
I tried version 5.3 and it’s really great.
However, I have a new issue.
After I finish typing,
when I try to change the font weight or text size by going to Tools → Edit Text, after I make the changes and save,
the text goes back from vertical to horizontal orientation.
If needed, I can record a video clip.
Could you please tell me the correct way to change font weight or text size after typing?
Thank you very much.
Oh, yes, now I see it too.
Unfortunately, I don’t know a solution and couldn’t figure out a workaround.
The problem is that the rewrite of Krita’s Text Tool is not completed yet, but it constantly gets the new completed parts added. At first, it is added to the nightlies, like the one you just downloaded, and the second step will be the implementation in a maybe upcoming ALPHA phase (now you got a preALPHA) before the BETA phase leads to the release of Krita 5.3. And, if we are very unlucky, it may even take another version step upwards.
But we all hope to get it earlier, and luckily we always get the newest developments via the nightlies.
Michelist
Where can I report this issue to help the development team fix it?
Where can I find the new 5.3 beta versions when they become available?
thanks
@AhabGreybeard, @raghukamath, @Sooz: Do you think this topic can be appended to @wolthera’s
Text Tool Thread?
And if so, can you please append/merge it?
@zz_j_6 If they decide that it is not suitable to be appended, then please add a post to @wolthera’s Text Tool Thread, in which you first describe briefly but exact the Text Tool issues with the Krita version used before you switched to 5.3.0 nightly (and which exact version number that was), and also which version of operating system you use.
Please, as the next thing, describe the issues you face with the 5.3.0 nightly you use, and in case you face further issues with upcoming nightlies, then please report them to that topic too when you experience them.
And, if you want to make the reporting fully complete, you can additionally create an account at https://bugs.kde.org/. Here I described how to do that correctly:
When the time comes for Krita 5.3.0 to enter the BETA phase, it will be announced here in the forum and the topic will be pinned globally to the forum, as it is currently with the Krita 5.2.3 BETA. I don’t know how long it will take / when Krita 5.3.0 will reach the BETA phase.
Michelist
The ‘Text Tool Thread’ topic is for broad discussion and reporting of development status.
As noted in that topic:
if you find bugs, please report them to bugs.kde.org under the product Krita, in the component Text.
@zz_j_6
Please summarise the problem as suggested by @Michelist above:
Then add a link to the formal bug report that you have made.
I’m pretty sure the reason it flips back to horizontal is because the rich text editor cannot remember that the text is in vertical. The reason I’m working on a completely new tool is that not just is it way more pleasant to work with, but also because there’s many features in the text layout that cannot be adequately supported by the rich text editor window.
I’m currently working on making it possible to edit font size and the like oncanvas, so please be patient.
@Michelist @wolthera
Thank you for your help.
I’ve found that I can adjust font weight, size, and prevent it from reverting to horizontal text using the SVG source editor,
although it’s a bit more complex.
I’m looking forward to future updates.
Thanks again.
