Brush that does not do "like multiply" - how to?

can anyone give me a tipp about which feature/button i have to look for in the settings when creating a brush, when i do not want it to add its opacity? like when i do one stroke, then another stroke crossing it - at the crosspoint there will be this ugly darker zone. to me it looks like what the layermode “multiply” does, if you use the brush on two different layers. but i would like that the color of the overlaying zone is similar to the rest of the stroke. i dont know if i explained it well?

for example i have the brush “awez acrylic wet”, and if i do two crossing strokes it looks like that - what should i change in the brush settings for not having this darker zone in the middle?

edit: i think i remember that in clip studio paint i could solve it because you could chose if you wanted to apply the"layer modes" or not, like for example “multiply”.

Look at painting mode

you mention" painting mode" and you linked it in the krita-handbook. i found the painting mode in the settings under “color”.

i can chose between “wash” and “build-up”. normally this arvez brush is set to wash. but if i set it to add, i lose the opacity, the paint is always at maximum opacity then… dont know how to solve this…

No, you don’t have to disable anything just switch between wash or buildup it changes how opacity is applied.

What you can also try is setting the blending mode to Greater and I believe there’s also a new one called Marker mode.

Greater and Marker are in the Mix set of blending modes and will give you the result you are looking for. Marker is available in version 5.3.1 onwards.

The ‘Wash’ vs “Build Up” is explained as a difference between overlapping in the same stroke vs overlapping in different strokes and that is the case.
However, “Build Up” seems to apply the principle to overlapping dabs in the same stroke and so, because dabs overlap anyway, the stroke does appear to be dark unless you set the brush opacity to be very low.

Takiro, 1. if i switch from “wash” to “build up”, as I said, i lose my ability to variate the opacity…

your second tipp: i tried the “greater” and “marker” and its true, they do that!! BUT, its not what I need exactly, because in these modes the result is that i cannot overpaint another stroke unless the second stroke is with less transparency. but i would need to be able to overpaint another stroke with a lighter stroke (more transparency), changing the pixels on the canvas to lighter as well.

sorry, its so difficult to explain it, maybe better with pictures? just let me know.

Ahab, yes, i tried to do “build up” plus low opacity, but i do want to use brushes with a high opacity, so thats not the solution :frowning:

This wont work, you can not paint with less transparency and make the pixels on the canvas less transparent. Transparency will only add up unless you erase. I don’t think there is any blending mode that can do that.

Takiro, thats a shame! with real analog colors i could with a semitransaparent glaze over thicker colors, for example you have a green tree and you want to make it a little more yellow with a semitransparent glaze in places…

You can do that in Krita. However you earlier wrote that you want to make something less transparent by painting over it, that does not work in real life either. You can make it lighter by using a blending mode that makes things lighter or by choosing a lighter color. Transparency is not the same as lightness (in fact making something more transparent can just as well make it darker when the under painting is dark).

There are numerous blending modes that can lighten an image like Lighten, Screen, Overly when used with a lighter color and many more. You can find more about them here:

Takiro, yes, I see! i understand i will have to learn more about blending modes, so maybe i can switch them while painting with one single brush - or i could create a few different brushes with different settings modifications and use them all, depending on the neccesity. its the first time i am trying to paint digitally, in clip studio paint i just did drawings, no paintings… i will post a painting here in the finished artworks section. i did it with a charcoal, but i am still looking for better options to paint. its a learning curve, but its fun, and its so nice, that you people here help me (so fast) - thanks!

Moving from traditional to digital can be quite a pain, I still remember how much I struggled with this. Depending on your painting style you might enjoy the brushes that use the smudge brush engine, they are closer to acrylic for example. There, when you would draw over with a lighter color they would mix.

the thing is, i never painted traditionally. i am starting only now. so i do not have a certain technique yet, its more how i IMAGINE how it would be

I found that this helped me.

thank you! but i think thats still not the solution for me. i changed to “add up” plus “marker” - and that indeed helps laying out planes with varying opacity, while using different strokes, without making ugly overlapping edges - but: when it want to glaze over it with another color, the color is really saturated, no transparent look.

maybe the best solution is to use for ex. the awez wet brush with “add up” and “marker” to build up a foundation, and then switch to a new layer to glaze over with light, transparent color, and then later merge the layers…

edit: no … i does not work this way. i wrote this before i tried it out. now i have tried it. using another layer does not solve the problem, makes no difference…

looks like ONE brush ist not enough

i will update here, if i find a good workflow for painting for me.
