In this thread a user asks how to animate a layer group, and I dont understand the response, what is cut-out animation? when I look it up all I can find is paper cut out animation. Ive made ~10 small animations and feel fairly familiar with how to do things so it sort of stumped me that i cant do something as simple as move a couple layers together in a key frame.
Hello @lemongrasscap and welcome to the forum
It just so happens that the user in that topic was using krita to simulate the techniques of traditional paper cut-out animation.
There have been additions to the facilities of krita since that topic was made, over two years ago.
Now, you can use animated transform masks to move the contents of every layer in a group in an animation.
This does not move the frame content itself. It moves the composited view of the frames.
Learning how to make and use animated transform masks is quite a process in itself and uses the Animation Curves docker:
Animation Curves Docker — Krita Manual 5.0.0 documentation
In digital cutout animation, you build the character in parts (head, torso, limbs), each element on separate layers… and then assemble and animate. You can do the planning, assembly and animation all in Krita…or export the character parts as png images, open them in another program (Blender, for example) and assemble and animate there.
I’ll leave some videos of the process done in Krita (turn on English subtitles):
And this was an example of the character made in Krita and exported to Blender:
