Donate banner on welcome page in the 5.2 beta

i think they were referring to the Donate banner mentioned earlier above, instead of removing it or reverting back to the “heart shaped support button” we could try to add some custom made Kiki art

Yeah I understood the message  earlier. I was just giving the link to the welcome page plans.

Regarding adding Kiki some people have issue with kiki too. Some people hide the splash screen because they do not want to see kiki.

I apologize for this statement off-topic:
:bowing_man:
I do not understand the “difficulties” of some users, especially in cases like this difficulty. Somehow such things are beyond my understanding.
It doesn’t even hinder the function, doesn’t limit it.
I don’t know if this saying regarding the condition of things received for free, the condition of which one should not criticize, also exists in English, but in German it is said “that one does not look a gift horse in the mouth”, to describe exactly this.

Perhaps the banner could be designed such that with a 10 dollar/ euro payment, it will be hidden for x amount of time. I understand the reasoning, muting it destroys the reason for increasing the banner size.
I can imagine that it might be nice to hold a design competition for the banner and then lock the banner designs behind a one time donation. So users can buy the banner they like.

Two birds one stone something something.

Way better than Spotify adds lol.

But yeah it would be more nice if people would submit their support krita art for the banner. I am sure it would be interesting being hit with a different vibe of art. Could even make community events for it.

Like maybe a boring and more regular one while offline and connected to the net you would never know what would you get from the website. Kinda like the news widget.

That way people that don’t code could actively contribute.

Well unless a ver específic design look is being persued this time around. I am not sure. With the differences of small and big screen to it design kinda falls flat. Honestly I have been to make a welcome screen prototype with a custom widget. The default widgets are sub par for good presentation.

Also Blender makes free movies for publicity. It is an amazing show case tool for people that don’t even use the program. That is why they have so much support.

I have to say the banner works, because it compelled me to renew my subscription :stuck_out_tongue: And yay, it’s a new beta release after all.

Just in case I apologize in advance but it seems a bit ridiculous that many people don’t like the mascot of a program, Kiki is part of Krita’s image, maybe they think it’s childish but honestly I would like a Banner with Kiki.

Besides, I think it would help to break down the belief that Krita is only good for making traditional art and/or backgrounds.

I recommend Krita to all my friends and people I know who draw anime, manga, comics, webcomics to use Krita, which is for all kinds of art and don’t get too carried away by what others say since there are many people who say that Krita doesn’t work well for Anime/manga art.

I remember someone saying that seeing Kiki made people think it was only used for anime/manga and so would put ‘serious artists’ off trying it.

On that basis they’d think that GIMP was for drawing cartoon animals and Inkscape was for drawing cartoon sea creatures.
(Blender was used by H.P. Lovecraft and you have to be careful with it.)

Some people just hate furries, which is totally their problem.

Believe me when I say that most people think otherwise, they don’t see it as an alternative to Clip Studio, for example yesterday someone asked me if Krita would be a good alternative to CSP and I obviously answered definitely yes.

I feel like Krita still has that image that it can only be used for a certain type of art, but not really, it can do a lot of things, my work is proof of that, unlike CSP where I had to download and test brushes, even create several to be able to do what I do in Krita.

Hello, my two cents.

  1. the banner annoyed me a little as it’s not well integrated. It looks like an ugly ad on a general site. And most people use an adblocker to get rid of this. So, as it is now, if there is a way to hide it, I suppose a lot of people will hide it.
  2. Kiki the mascot…well, I don’t know any other program with a mascot. Even the Japanese ones. Mascots were cool in the 90’s but no modern program will use a mascot (except for children maybe). I tried to participate to challenges with Kiki in them and it’s an overcomplicated figure to draw. And it’s quite an inefficient mascot, as people do not think of Kiki when searching for Krita. It’s not a big problem as developing a stable and good program is more important than discussing about the necessity of a mascot but I think Kiki does not help Krita’s promotion. So it’s useless in my opinion. But I may be wrong and would like to discover examples where Kiki is important.

In conclusion : thanks to the team to work hard on this program and do as you like

Hmm

There are more programs and/or products with mascots, although at the moment I don’t remember well, but there are, and in fact, Asian people like to put little mascots on their products, mostly cute things.

A little more info about mascots in Japan since you mentioned it.

And this part is something that seems very accurate to me:

“The fact is,” she said “if you really want to get a message across to the public, we find it’s better to use bright and colourful characters.”

I always thought that a “Blender” was needed to create a 3D monkey head…
If someone wants to know more about Kiki

Sorry for being Off-Topic again, at least a little:

Nearly every Linux distro has a mascot, if not any. The same is true for the software made belonging to the KDE-Family of software, there was even a request for creating a mascot for a software about 1½ year ago here in the forum. And there is the “List of computing mascots”, that shows an incomplete list of mascots, and even with its incompleteness it is a long list:

I don’t really pay attention to the banner because like @raghukamath mentioned, the page will be redesigned and this it the first beta for Krita 5.2, so anything in beta (like in any other program that is in beta) will be subject to change.

The whole Kiki thing confuses me. I’m probably saying the same thing as others however many other programs have mascots that may or may not be intergrated into the logo of said program. Alot of other companies often also have mascots that they or have another company make (Chester the Cheetah for Cheetos and Tony the Tiger for Frosted Flakes for example) an mascot that are specifically made to market whatever product(s) the company is making. Krita having Kiki as a mascot is nothing that is new or different at all.

Just to be clear, the banner will probably stay in this release until the next redesign of welcome screen.

I think we are taking this topic too seriously it is not that krita has incorporated any ad from google or ad networks nor it is showing ad for other things. it is just a call to donate.

Can the banner be made more subtle? sure it can be. Anyone is welcome to propose a alternative design banner which can go with both light and dark theme and is prominent enough to catch the users attention towards the depleting donation money that krita project gets now.

The text can be same. The font krita uses for marketing purpose are - Days One and Yanone Kaffeesatz. Both are open source fonts. No proprietary font is allowed. The dimensions of the banner should be proportional to what it is now so that it is a drop in replacement of current banner and there will be no need to redesign the layout. In my opinion It is not worth it to spend more coding time on the welcome screen now because it is going to be redesigned anyway. Any help is welcome The decision to use the alternative design rests with the developers.

This banner is to sustain krita which should be prime importance than a little annoyance to some users. And as far as I know the banner it is already working, the donation went up slightly since the beta. So clearly it is working as intended if users have issue with krita getting money then I do not know what to say.

Does Krita have an organizational stylebook/style guide?

Not that I know of. When I made some marketing materials I chose the fonts that are listed above since they have been used earlier. the Krita text in the krita logo uses Yanone Kaffeesatz font. I chose colours from the logo which denote cmyk, I also used only krita brushes for the background to highlight the brushes and painting aspect.

That said nobody has made the organisation style book yet as far as I know.

I think you’ve just created a good start on one, I’ll just run with what you’ve provided for now

Bit by bit, Krita is becoming better. I’m confident that the support of raster layers with the align tools(arrange docker or interface) will come in the future and when it does, it’ll be a major starting point for those who want to add some bit of graphic design aspects to their paintings and drawings; and hopefully we also get guides that can be placed at specific position later at some point.
It is bit by bit.
The myth that Krita isn’t good for serious artists will disappear eventually.
I’m pretty sure Krita’s user base is a clear metrics that proves it.

Bonus : check the artwork of this Cameroonian artist and see the rendering of his work.
He uses solely Krita! And he’s a pro(his followers base indicates it, popular artists like ddmark, inkartluis, raiikencomic, kuzomari follow him.)
