I’ve implemented the eight Paint Tool SAI blend modes Shine (SAI), Shade (SAI), Shine/Shade (SAI), Dodge (SAI), Burn (SAI), Burn/Dodge (SAI), Hard Mix (SAI) and Difference (SAI). It’s based on @cromachina’s work on psd-export.
The Shine (SAI) mode sort of already existed under the name Luminosity/Shine (SAI), but it had bugs with its alpha handling. I’ve left the old version of this blend mode in under the name “Luminosity/Shine (Not Quite SAI)” to allow checking whether changing the mode breaks anyone’s pictures.
Those modes should also be read from and written to PSD files properly. So when you save a PSD file in SAI using these modes, they should get loaded by Krita and vice-versa.
These builds also contain the Marker mode from SAI, more information on how that works over in its own thread: Feedback Wanted: Marker Mode
Would the blend modes be useful to you and is there any issues where they don’t work as expected?
Is the PSD compatibility useful to you and are there issues that don’t work as expected?
Do any existing pictures of yours that use the Luminosity/Shine (SAI) mode change for the worse when you change those layers to use Shine (SAI) instead?
And I guess if you have feedback on the Marker mode you can also put that here as well.
If you find this useful but don’t have any other comments, feel free to just give it a thumbs up reaction, no need to write out a reply for it.
Anything that increases compatibility with other programs is welcome. So thumbs up!
I personally try to avoid PSD, but if I can import files that are given to me in Paint Tool SAI PSD format, then I would be happy to be able to use them. So another thumbs up!
Additional blend modes are also acceptable, perhaps one of these new modes will be needed at some point, who knows? I am always in favor of more options. The question is, should a separate PTS category be created, or should the modes be sorted logically in Krita’s existing system?
I don’t recall ever using the old SAI blend mode, so I can’t comment on that.
I ran some tests with SAI and Krita, and it seems to me that psd files export fine without any problems with the new modes, but I think the Burn blending mode in SAI and Krita is the same. I don’t know if it was worth recreating it in Krita. I haven’t done exhaustive testing, just a few quick tests, but if there are any differences, I may not have noticed them between Krita’s default Burn mode and SAI’s.
If I’m not mistaken, SAI has some blending modes starting with [TS].
Their effects are equivalent to the blending effects in Photoshop when “Transparent Shape Layer” is enabled. These blending modes usually take effect when semi-transparent. (In Photoshop, they seem to only apply to layers.)
SAI can also access regular blending modes through settings.
The [TS] modes in SAI are just regular blend modes that Krita already has. For example, what SAI calls “Color Burn [TS]” is just called “Color Burn” in Krita.
The “regular blending” modes in SAI’s settings just changes the names of the modes. For example, “Shade” turns into “Linear Burn”. The blend mode is still the same.
I know(I just got it wrong), what I mean is that the blending mode of sai is the result of Photoshop turning off ‘Transparent Shape Layer’. The TS version was added to Sai 2020-05-10
I think it’s almost impossible. The blending modes in the “Lighten” group eventually cause the image to darken, and this will definitely be detected immediately. After all, for most blending modes, the blending layer should not change when the lower layer is transparent.
