Freyalupen's Sketches (2022-2024)

I’ve been seeing sketchbook threads lately, and thought about starting one of my own, so, well, here it is. Maybe I can convince myself to post here occasionally.

It’s hard to figure out what to post, but… drawing original things is something I’d like to improve at, so here’s a drawing of character of mine which I thought turned out fairly well. Though it probably helped that I copied the pose from something else.

I wish you good luck on your sketchbook journey! Use this thread as an “accountability partner”, almost an incentive to put in the work. Also, since it’s a sketchbook, don’t feel pressure to put in your best work, sometimes things don’t go as planned, and that’s important too! Maybe posting something that you thought wasn’t great might get you feedback to help improve as well.

Look forward to seeing what you post!

The not-so-great stuff can be kinda embarassing even for me to look at, but we’ll see. I guess the important thing is to keep practicing.

Meanwhile, something different; drawings of flowers from photographs.

Blue curls and pink evening primrose.

Some fanart of Pepper&Carrot from a couple months ago that I ended up working on again.

Aww, both under the teapot moon  Thanks!
(I uploaded it to the gallery here, thanks!)

@Deevad: I’m happy you liked it!

I meant to post this earlier than now; timelapse of the Pepper&Carrot fanart.

(I forgot to record part of it at 0:48.)
At first I tried to draw Pepper’s legs and feet, but then I hid them behind the grass instead so I wouldn’t have to draw them . I only thought to add the teapot moon later on, but it ended up giving a subject to the otherwise empty right side.
When I started the drawing, I was thinking about how it’s nice to have a cat asleep on your lap, even if you can’t get up because of it.

Fanart of a videogame character, a costumed Sothe from Fire Emblem Heroes.

It’s directly based on the official art, I think maybe that’s called a “redraw”? It’s something I do often but I probably won’t post much of that here because I’d rather share things that are more original.
Though for anyone who might be interested I guess I could link my deviantArt where I dump stuff, there’s a lot like this (well, usually more sketchy). (Most of the stuff there’s drawn in Krita.)

Maybe I’ll try drawing my OC from the beginning of this thread in this pose, I think it would be fitting enough.

I haven’t been drawing much lately, but I drew my OC again. Started with the pose from the post above, then changed her arms to be crossed, which is probably my favorite pose for the character. Still, as usual I’m not really satisified with the way it came out. I can imagine her staring at me and thinking “Hmph. You need to study more.”

I drew this last August, inspired by the monthly contest topic of “Rainfall”.

With this month’s contest topic being specifically Autumn-themed, I’m looking forward to trying to come up with something that gives the feeling of the season, and of a journey taking place during it.

Reminding myself that this is a sketchbook thread and I can post half-finished things I never got around to finishing.
A lizard on a tree, based on a photograph.

And from today, sketch of yellow passionvine with a metallic green bee (also from a photograph).

Even if they’re not finished it’s better than not drawing anything.

My same character again, wielding a bow and using a magic ability to light the arrow on fire, in some kind of outdoor setting.

I made up the pose and spent a lot of time playing with brushes for the background.

And a friend’s character, in what was supposed to be an attack pose, but it seems she might’ve lost her balance.

I copied the pose from something and didn’t do a background, so it was more straightforward, but even then, the pose didn’t come out quite right. It’s funnier this way though, so I guess they call that a “happy little accident”.

A tiger swallowtail butterfly among clouds, inspired by last month’s monthly contest of using the mirror tool. The clouds are horizontally mirrored, and the butterfly was drawn vertically mirrored at a 70 degree angle by using the multibrush tool.

That butterfuly is striking. What a great way to use the multibrush.

I tried to capture how the sky looked last night around sunset.

A yellow flax flower, based on a photograph.
Timelapse:

Spent an hour or two on this one, using Ramon’s WIP colored pencils: DET wet to sketch with, DET wet 2 to shade, and Burnish 4 to smudge the background a little.
Pencils and colored pencils are my favorite things to draw with traditionally, I’m not much of a painter or anything like that. So it’s nice to be able to replicate them digitally, and it also encourages me to use a simpler process of drawing everything on one layer.

Glad you like them. Any brush your fav and any to be deleted or modified?

A sketch of my character staring off into space at the ocean or something. I spent some time staring at it trying to figure out how to continue working on it, but I’m not sure where to go from here (as usual).

Female cardinal, based on a photo. Probably could’ve done without drawing every twig, it makes it a bit cluttered.
