Gingerberry - A WebComic Series

(Update) Hey there! When I first shared this post it was for my first 18 page Proof-of-Concept comic. Since then Gingerberry has turned into a full series! Chapter One currently updates on ComicFury + Webtoon. Please check it out!

(Original post) I’ll use this page to update progress on the series as it unfolds, but for now, I’ll let you read the first 18-page short that I made as a Proof-Of-Concept. Thanks to this first short, I understand the process of making comics better now, and feel more confident moving forward with comic creation in the future.

Synopsis: Joan Gingerberry is a young woman grappling with the anxieties and uncertainty that come with adulthood—burdened by regret and trauma, she struggles to reconcile her past with her present. Often withdrawing into herself, Joan finds the one solace in her life being her childhood companions—stuffed animal dolls that come to life through magic. Among these companions is Roy, a charming rabbit and her dearest friend, who will remind her that it is okay to be sad, and most importantly, that it is valuable to learn to smile again…

You’ll be able to read the series on these platforms~

To make things simple, I’ll share the first 18-page short story here for everyone to read. In the future, I’ll only share updates, WorkInProgress, and links to future chapters. :slightly_smiling_face:

That’s a lot of artwork and wonderful storytelling. Thank you for showing us

Thanks so much! Took me about 3 months to make this, but that’s because I didn’t have a real script, so I would sometimes take a week or more thinking what to do next. It’s okay, I’m almost done writing chapter 1, after that I’ll start thumbnailing the pages, and then the art should be made at a much faster pace.

How’s your spooky month been everyone? Are we feeling the Halloween vibes yet?

I’m still working on what will be the first official Chapter 1 of Gingerberry, but as an aside, I’m going to try and make another one-shot 6-8 page comic before the end of the month, wish me luck! I’m gonna need it!

Well, it is Halloween evening, and I’m still not finished with the short. Don’t worry tho, it is still going to be released over the next few days, just have about 3 more pages to finish of the 7.

I thought I’d share a little bit of the process for you all on this comic. Unlike the previous short, I drew the pages traditionally, and then took a quick picture with a camera of the page. (I own a scanner but was too lazy to use it ) Everything is done digitally in Krita afterwards, including text.

This Halloween short is actually a bit of a callback to the origins of this comic, which began as a fantasy comic/game that originally had a much more spooky atmosphere. I found the pages of that original test comic short on my hard-drive from all the way back from late 2017.

The origins go even further back! My first drawing of Roy probably go back to late 2013… Here’s an illustration of Roy, Ike and Mel from 2016.

As you see, these characters have had a place in my heart for a long time… Anyway, thanks for reading! Now I need to get back to finishing the short! You’ll see pages trickle onto ComicFury first.

Happy Halloween!..

Well, not anymore I guess… Happy November anyhow, here is a brand new Gingerberry Short called “The Beast” This is an even shorter comic from the previous, so I’ll share it here in full, but in the future I won’t be sharing any chapters any bigger than this, you’ll have to go to one of the pages linked above to read the bigger stories in full.

Hello again everyone! No updates for the comic right now, but with the Holidays coming up, I thought it would be best to share a little Christmas cheer!

More Gingerberry will come early 2025! The first chapter to kick off the story will be a bit more emotional than what you might expect, so please stay tuned! This illustration is a good example of what I think the art style of the future chapters will be like, clean linework with soft colors. I look forward to sharing more with you all soon, including production art. Until then, Happy Holidays!

First update of 2025! Here’s some brand new character art I created for the upcoming chapter. The character designs may not be final, but it does give you an idea of some of the new characters we are about to meet!

As of now, the writing of Chapter One is finished! And I am almost done with page thumbnails. I’ve even begun illustrating the first page. Chapter One is close to 30 pages long, so I’ll want to complete a little more than half of the chapter before I begin posting, I want to create a bit of a buffer.

I am sharing this comic on ComicFury as well as PDF versions on my website and Itch.Io. But I gotta ask, is there anywhere else I should be hosting this comic? Webtoons is of course very popular, but as an indie with a sort of niche story like this, I assume it wouldn’t get much traction over there, but maybe I’m wrong? Anyone have any experience with webtoons or other webcomic sites?

Thanks! Cheers to the webcomic gang! :kiki_laugh:

In all honesty it has been a challenge to get this comic off the ground, concepts for it have been floating in my head for years, and everytime I would start I would feel that my art wasn’t up to snuff, or I wasn’t completely happy with the story, but finally, after making the two shorts that I did last year, the comic finally feels plausible. And already I’m making head ways into chapter one! :slightly_smiling_face:

Gingerberry is being updated weekly every Friday on ComicFury, I’m still looking at other WebComic sites for hosting, but I like how I can share 1 page a week on comicFury instead of episodes like on WebToons. Perhaps I’ll wait to release the comic on other platforms until I can batch sequences from the chapters into episodes.

Please check it out, Subscribe if you can, and I will release art snippets on here every now and then to keep you updated!

Working on this comic has been a ton of work… I have been drawing pages for the 1st chapter since January, and have only the first 15 of what should be 28 pages completed so far. But even tho it is a lot of work, it has been rewarding seeing every page completed.

First 6 pages of the comic is on ComicFury, this scene is from page 05.

New character appeared in the latest page this week! Meet Dina Oliveton! Check it out on ComicFury.

At this current moment right now I am finishing up page 19, this is where things get a bit more dramatic and interesting… :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth: I am pleased to say that the comic is going pretty smoothly in production, though I’d like to be a bit faster with my process, but still, I make at least a page every week. Having a script and thumbnails to go off of have made this process much easier of course, cause I don’t have to overthink what it is I’m drawing, all the planning and layout is done, so I only have to focus on the art itself.

If you yourself ever make a comic, please, for your own sake, thumbnail it so you don’t have to suffer. :joy:

For two months now I’ve successfully been releasing weekly pages for my comic on ComicFury. This is kinda a big deal as I’ve never been this consistent with a project before, but it feels good, and I’m reasonably far ahead as I’m up to page 23 right now and just released page 12 today. So a little over ten pages is a great backlog to be working with!

Last Weekend, after almost 5 months of work, I finished all illustration for Gingerberry Chapter One! (Yay me!)

Chapter One ends with page 30, 2 more pages then I initially thumbnailed back in January, but as I made the pages I noticed a few flaws in the pages towards the end of the story so I made some small adjustments. Glad I did! The comic is a total of 33 pages if you count cover, intro & outro artworks with it.

I’m so excited for people to enjoy my story! It is quite meaningful to me, and I think it will be meaningful to others as well!

The pressure is on to finish writing Chapter 2 now. I can’t draw future pages until I have thumbnails to work with. Luckily I’ve got a number of weeks left before Chp.1 ends, so hopefully Chp.2 can start almost immediately upon Chp.1’s completion. (I hope)

This deadline is entirely self imposed, but I enjoy having something to keep me consistent and push me forward with creating. I always had difficulty with perfectionism stalling me from moving forward with projects before, so I’d rather keep creating and moving forwards then get stuck because of indecision or fear of bad choices. I simply need to trust myself and move forward!

Read the story on Comic Fury for the latest pages! I’ll probably soon add the comic on webtoon in the future as well!
