How to paint selection area (a.k.a. quick mask mode)

How could I paint a selection area in Krita? In Photoshop it’s called Quick Mask. I’m pretty sure there is a similar feature in Krita, but I forgot how to activate it. And the Krita document site is down now so I can’t search for it.

I think it has something to do with “Global selection mask”, but Global selection mask doesn’t show up until I have selected some region. I’d like it to switch to a mode, similar to PS’ Quick Mask, where I can just paint selection with whatever brush I’m currently using. Is it possible?

I belive this plugin is what you are looking for:

Maybe I’m wrong, but hope that not.

If there is no Global Selection and you enable the Show Global Selection Mask option then a black Global Selection Mask is created.
If Show Global Selection is already enabled and there is no selection, you can toggle the Show Global Selection Mask option to create a black Global Selection Mask.

I usually do like this:

  1. Create a selection on the canvas with any selection tool;
  2. Press the “Q” key on the keyboard: whatever is out of the selection will be red;
  3. Take a brush. By painting with white, you add to the selection; painting with black you subtract;
  4. When finished, press the Q key again.

It seems to be the answer. After assigning a shortcut to “Show Global Selection Mask”, it works pretty much the same as in PS.
