King-under-Leaves Final Illustration

Hi everyone! I’ve been away from the forum but I want to share with you this finished piece after some updates I posted months ago

In this piece the halflings celebrate one of their seasonal feasts, but as a preparation for copious amounts of food and fun, the tradition says they must first crown the so called King-under-Leaves, the Woods Regent. A mix of pantomime and agrary ritual, the coronation must be done on the elven ruinned throne under the Sacred Willow in the heart of the Glimmerdeep woods.

The whole teather, many speculates, was inherited from the more serious and profound coronations of elven kings on the same place. Rulers of a forgotten kingdom from which only magical glimpses and a, once glorious, throne remains in marble, emerald and gold. The halflings carries the tradition forward because the legends say the elven King will return one day and reclaim from the halfling Regent his Crown an his title with much respect and gratitude for taking care of the forest.

My intention was to make a coronation scene akin to those in european art but with a fantasy twist. Hope you all like it!

Many thanks to @AhabGreybeard and @Someonesane for the invaluable help on dealing with gradient maps and file layers, I would not be able to test this painting approach without your help.

My ultimate goal in digital art is to create paintings so similar to ones made traditionally, that it is easy to believe that it was painted over one hundred years ago or more. It is always great to see that someone else is doing it, and doing it really well. Thanks for strengthening my motivation even more!

@canedo Thank you for inviting me personally. I’ve been asking for this and really looking forward to this moment. When I saw your drawing that time, I realized that it was just a piece of something larger and I was not mistaken. I’ve been watching for over an hour now and I’m upset, don’t get me wrong, I don’t see what to find fault with! :rofl:It’s just a Grandiose picture. Stunningly thought-out detailing of clothes, the play of light in the folds, the gleam of metal on weapons, and the gorgeous rendering of other objects. Lighting is a separate topic. It is not simple, but in spots, because it is a forest and the light slips through the leaves of the crowns. And you showed it superbly. Amazing! The picture has a clear plot, the enthusiasm of all the characters creates a sense of the comical nature of the event. Each of them has their own emotion. A wonderful selection of shades. In such cases, we say, I TAKE OFF MY HAT WHEN I SEE YOU. I am sure that your work reveals itself in its original size and impresses even more.

I have been following this project since the sketch, according to my calculations, five months have passed, in my opinion, more time was spent for such a picture, taking into account the preparation of the final sketch. @BixclowArt But you have to admit, it was worth the effort.

Я с момента наброска следил за этим проектом, по моим подсчётам пять месяцев прошло, на мой взгляд для такой картины возможно и больше было затрачено, с учётом подготовки окончательного наброска. Но согласись, это стоило таких усилий.

Hi @Mariusz_Galaj! I’m really glad you noticed it, that was somewhat my intention: to make a traditional painting in digital form. I’m not going as far as to say I wanted it to be indistinguishable from a painting made hundred of years ago, this is a tough job, but I really love painting and painting history and I organized the process for this painting to mirror the one from baroque, specially Rubens and Velázquez. It isn’t a full translation, it’s more of a adaptation, since my aim is to try to give digital painting more depth, as you would see in a real painting, with layers of transparency and opaqueness.

This fragments were with me all the time:

I hope you achieve your goals and I am happy to be of help in strenthening even more your resolve. If I a can give you advice, study traditional painting, paint real paintings if possible so you can learn what they are about, how they feel and behave. Then you run back to krita and put the machine to the test! :fire:

Thank you again for your kind words!

You are so kind! Thank you very much, this is such nice reading of the work. Often in the many solitary hours making a picture, not just this one, I think any painting, it is easy to lose the perspective of things, to even imagine other people will see what you are doing and reflect on it in their own solitary (or not) hours. I’m glad this image reached you and was able to speak to you in such eloquent manner.

I dind’t knew what’s the forum limitations to the image size so I uploaded this version but here are some details I particullarly liked:

Thank you very much! I honestly don’t know exactly how much time was involved because since this was a personal project, it suffered many pauses but the main work was carried out through january and february this year with drawing and underpainting made on and off in bits of january, february and april last year.

In the picture, the guessing cat is not a cat. :face_with_monocle: Still a cat, and even asleep. :+1: @canedo I wish you victory in the contest of the month. :handshake:

На картине, гадал кот не кот. Все таки кот, да ещё и спит. Желаю победы на конкурсе.
