Krita 5.2.2 update 'Fatal Error' on chromebook

MAN.
I don’t know WHY this is happening at all!
Before you ask “Why don’t I use Linux?” because it always somehow takes up space in my Chromebook and crashes. Plus, I am not searching through those javascripts.
Before you ask, I am doing this on Chromebook OS.

I’m not sure either but I think I found something on google that might answer your question.

" According to a Quora user from January 2022, Krita may not open directly on a Chromebook due to compatibility issues. Chromebooks run on Chrome OS, which is based on Linux, while Krita is more common on Linux, macOS, and Windows distributions. However, compatibility and software availability can change over time. One option is to check the Chromebook’s Linux App Support, as Linux apps may be available through Crostini.

Krita is a digital painting application designed for artists. It has features for creating comics, animations, illustrations, storyboards, and concept art. The minimum system requirements are Windows 8.1 or higher, macOS 10.12, and Linux, with 4 GB of RAM recommended. OpenGL 3.0 or higher, or Direct3D 11, is also required for GPU.

If Krita tells you it can’t find some files and then closes, it could be due to: A corrupted download, An issue during installation, and Manually deleted or moved resources.

The Krita configuration can be reset in a few ways, including:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Reset Krita Configurations
  3. Click OK to confirm
  4. Press and hold Shift + Alt + Ctrl while starting Krita" (This is what it said on Google)

So wait.
Does this mean it won’t get fixed?

@TheRedMan
Most of the comments I’ve seen about problems with Chromebooks are very recent (in the last week or so) and seems to be related to the latest update.

Have you already tried going back to 5.1.5?

@Kingjulien

From your first post here, you said you had been running Krita on your Chromebook – or did I misunderstand?

If you were running Krita before this last update, that would probably be 5.1.5 as that was the last version on the Play Store prior to this most recent update. Have you tried reverting to 5.1.5?

How do I exactly do that?
Because last time I checked it’s in a (beta) version in Google play store.

@TheRedMan
Have you been running Krita on your Chromebook and it worked well prior to the update?

Hello! Since Krita seems to have stopped working through the Google Play Store, I was thinking of switching to a Linux version of Krita. However, I am not very familiar with using Linux and may need a hand in downloading it.

I have a HP Chromebook, if you need more specs in order to help lmk what you need to know!

When you go to Download | Krita The website should offer you the correct file to download for your OS. However I think Chromebooks don’t actually run a real Linux but simply a flavor of Android instead.

As far as I know, it is possible to install Linux on a Chromebook, and then you can use the AppImage of Krita:

I have that file downloaded now, but what do I do after that?

If I’m not mistaken, then your issue is related to the topics that were combined/merged into the “Mega-Topic” I’ll link below, and your problem is related to a currently unsolved issue.

@Sooz: Could you please merge this topic with:

If you agree that it is about the same issue?

Yes.
It worked very well until it stopped working on April 16th 2024

So I dusted off my old chromebook and I can replicate the issue. There is nothing in krita.log and sysinfo log still says I am on 5.0.2 (I am on 5.2.2). Which likely means it doesn’t even reach this point

I’ll check ADB over the weekend to see if something shows

“Your application encountered a fatal error and cannot continue.”
I think something was wrong with my device for a second until I realized, it would not work and kept saying the same thing. I even uninstall and installed Krita from the app store and it just started happening 2-3 days ago and I don’t know why this is happening.
BUT, apparently people on Reddit have a
Same problem as me

Like, I don’t know why this is suddenly happening but people using Chromebooks are not able to open Krita when it worked before.
Is there a reason why it would not open and keeps saying “Your application encountered a fatal error and cannot continue.”?
I need to know if this is fixable.

Welcome to the forum.

Let us know if you have tried any of the offered solutions (the search function is at the upper right of your screen).

@sooz: Should this be added/merged (in)to this topic too:

As a way to collect all these messages in one place, making it easier for the devs to get an oversight and not to miss any messages on it?

There’s now another, similar bug report, which is not on ChromeOS, but is on x86 (aka Intel) Android, which is the same architecture as some Chromebooks. This one has a logcat attached, containing the actual error. 485707 – Crash on startup on Android x86_64 platform

That bugreport also states that Krita Plus (aka Stable Nightly) works. Does that solve the issue for anyone else?: Krita 5.2.2+ for Android x86_64

I downloaded krita through the google play store on my chromebook. It’s worked fine for months, but today when I tried to open the program it said there was a fatal error. I’ve tried deleting and redownloading it, but it keeps happening. I’ve tried to download older versions but those won’t even open. Is there any way I can fix this?
