Krita 5.3 has slow UI on Windows

I used my app with no issues for 1 day, then after a few days of not using it it doesn’t work anymore. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and every time i try to make a new document, it just freezes and says not responding, I can’t even use it. What can I do?

 Hello @turtlelicious1850, and welcome to the forum!

What you can do?
Answer the following questions as a starting point for us that will enable us to help you:

Here, we need more information from you to be able to help you. Usually, users should provide the following information in all of their requests for support, to enable the helpers doing their job without having to request them all the time. And that although all the information is not needed in any case, only in many of the cases, simply because it saves a lot of requests and enables us to begin helping you quicker/earlier.
These questions are:

Which OS in which version do you use? E.g. Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11?

Which exact version of Krita do you use? You can find it via Help > Show system information for bug reports, where it is written behind Version:, we need at least the number before the brackets, but when you are already there, you can copy it in complete and insert it in your answers. For example, my current version is 5.2.15 (git 89dea6d). If you can not start Krita (anymore), you can find it out with a look at your downloaded installation/portable package. Examples: krita-5.2.15-x86_64.AppImage, krita-x64-5.2.15.zip, krita-x64-5.2.15-setup.exe, krita-5.2.15_signed.dmg. Also, the store pages and Steam provide this information for the programs you download there.

From where do you have your version of Krita?
Is it the version from Krita’s homepage, the repository of your Linux distribution, Flatpak, AppImage, Snap, the stores from Apple, Epic, Microsoft or the Play Store, and if it is from somewhere else, from where is it?

In the case you use Windows, do you use the installer version or the portable version of Krita?

Howdy, I believe I’m also having the same problem, today it suddenly started freezing and crashing without even opening a document, the menus are really laggy too. I tried changing every performance and display settings, tried resetting settings, reinstalling, and still nothing.
I got it from steam, the app version is 5.3.0 (git 148ce5c)
Windows 11, 32gb ram, rtx3070 and 12th gen i7
Thanks for the help!

Made an account as well just to mention a similar problem.
I use krita through steam on Win 10, which automatically downloaded the latest update for 5.3.0

I’m encountering the same thing, had no issues about two weeks ago when I last used it. However now it is unbearably slow after the update, the UI/Toolbars lags severely when hovered while my Mozilla firefox runs smoothly, moving images or the canvas around will lag or outright freeze for a few seconds.

I tried every trick I know, updating my graphic drivers, updating my OS, cleaning my system, configuring Krita to handle more, changing display types, enable and disable graphic acceleration.
Nothing solved it.

I went to the steam game versions & betas and selected the rollback option (Jul 26, 2024)
Aside from a few test toggle settings which were quickly reverted, it works exactly how I remember it, smooth and without flaw.

The rollback version: Krita Version: 5.2.2

The current (laggy/slow) version: Krita Version: 5.3.0 (git 148ce5c)

it worked. thank you!

I’m having the same issue. Today it became impossible to work in Krita because of freezes and lag. The older version (yesterday) ran perfectly fine even with high canvas resolution.
Maybe someone knows what to do if your Steam rollback version is really old, like from 2023?

It would be really nice if we could choose any previous version in the rollback options

So all of you are using the Steam version?

I vaguely remember that with the new 5.3 version there was a change in the renderer (something something OpenGL something) but I’m not exactly sure. I believe I saw it here Krita 5.3/6.0 beta thread Perhaps changing the graphics acceleration settings will help.

It’s this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=512694

We’re trying to get more information, so please add to the bugreport. Like, for example, everyone who has reported their hardware up till now has been using an NVidea card, but it would be good if we had more info (like, is it only NVidea, or maybe only a specific series within NVidea?)

Hi, all!

Could you please check if you have any settings in the GPU driver related to VSync? Perhaps you have it forced in the driver?

And one more question, is this issue intermittent or persistent? I mean, does it appear on every run of Krita or only sometimes? And, does it go away if you stop touching mouse/tablet for about 20 seconds and then start again?

Steam version of Krita.
Motherboard: MSI b350 Tomahawk
CPU: Ryzen 5600x
GPU: Nvidia RTX 5070 ti
Windows 11 Pro 24H2
Tablet: Wacom Intuos Pro PTH-660 (Driver version: 6.3.46-1)

While drawing, right after I finish a stroke and lift the stylus or mouse, Krita freezes, so I can’t draw properly.
Changing OpenGL/Direct3D 11 Renderer in the setting doesn’t help.
I don’t have VSync forced in the Nvidia driver settings as well.
Also, I can’t roll back to the previous version on Steam, since the settings only allow selecting a version from Dec 9, 2023. I had to download a non-steam version (5.2.16) so that I could draw again.

Steam version of Krita as well:

Device Name DESKTOP-HI3IAKC
Processor AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB
Storage 1.82 TB SSD Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER (12 GB)
Device ID DCE0936A-C100-4528-ABFF-9F60E75320BD
Product ID 00330-80000-00000-AA482
System Type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Pen and touch support with 9 touch points

VSync is not forced on/set to yes. 3D application setting is used by default on my system.

The issue is very much persistent as it happened every time on every launch while I was troubleshooting. Giving it time does not really solve it and no settings or configuration changes gave me any success, it’s a steady lag/latency all across the application, with occasional bouts of severe lag/latency. Never crashed, was just very slow.

Rolled back on steam and Krita works like a dream. Was very odd.

Ok, I’ve renamed the thread’s topic, so that people will know that this is the thread about the weird UI slowdown.

I have shortcut composer and kanvas buddy is there a possible chance that that’s the reason why my krita is lagging after I update it? because it was completely fine before the update? did it become incompatible?

I’m on Windows 11. Unfortunately, this release isn’t usable for me; everything is sluggish, from the UI to drawing.

If there’s any system detail I can share to help figure this out, I’d be happy to help.

Yes, we need system info, card, which version of windows, etc. There’s a summary in help->system info for bug reports.

Click Me

But please put it inside a details tag, as the total system information is quite large.

Look, I’m really discouraged. I’ve been using Krita for a year and a half, and after two months of finally getting the hang of it, it’s now ruining my life just as I’m trying to put together a portfolio for a commission. I’m using the Steam version, and unlike other programs and games on Steam, there’s no way to revert to an older version. I’m already feeling burned out from drawing, and now this happens on top of everything.

Steam has been reverted to the previous version while we try to figure out this issue.

What hardware are you using?

I’m unable to open the program at all.

It shows the loading menu for a few seconds before closing.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program from the website and it still doesn’t work.

OS: Windows 11 (Laptop)
Version: 5.3.0 (git 148ce5c)
Where: Krita’s Homepage
the .exe installer

AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
Nvidia 595.97 (update came out today)

Tablet: Huion

I’m also having an issue with lag. At first when I downloaded the update, Krita would open, freeze, then crash continuously. I managed to reset my settings fast enough and Krita opened. I then had the issue of the program freezing every time I would select a brush or make a brush stroke.

Note: I also updated my Nvidia drivers today (they also released an update) and there’s still lag in my brush strokes. I can make a brush stroke now but when i stop it freezes, then resumes the stroke.
