I’ve been experiencing similar UI performance issues with the new Krita 5.3.0 (git 148ce5c) release.
Global UI Lag: While the canvas itself feels okay, I am getting significant stuttering and cursor lag whenever I hover over the top menus. It feels like the UI is struggling to “refresh” as the mouse moves over it.
5.3 vs 6.0: I tested the Krita 6.0.0 experimental release as well. Interestingly, the UI lag was gone in 6.0, but I encountered significant visual glitches like the flickering of the layer docker in popup palette, so I’ve moved back to 5.3.0 for stability.
I’ve already tried a complete clean reinstall still the Issue persists..
I tried quitting Google Drive desktop app as someone mentioned in another thread… and it worked!!! Now my brushstrokes are smooth and the menus faster!
Is the lag also present in dialogs? For example, Settings → Configure Krita has a few drop-down menus, are those laggy as well or is it only in the main window?
Yes, lag is present in the Settings window too. At first I wasn’t sure because most of the settings’ dropdown menus are usually short, but after trying a longer dropdown (Settings→General→File Handling→Default Export Type), its items exhibit the exact same lag that is not present in 6.0, I double checked.
If you go into Settings → Configure Krita → Display → Canvas Acceleration and turn off Canvas Graphics Acceleration and then restart Krita, does this make any difference? Make sure you restart Krita after changing the setting, that may make a difference!
Thanks for that catch! Installing PowerToys causes the issue for me as well. Disabling “FancyZones” in PowerToys makes it stop happening, whatever that is. Maybe we can manage to make some progress on this now.
Another user mentioned in that topic, from which the PowerToys message stems, that they found someone saying in another different topic that Google Drive Desktop was the culprit with them, and after termination their issues were gone.
Yeah, hopefully that’s the same underlying problem. Other developers who actually have a proper Windows environment are also able to make it happen and trace the issue, so there’ll probably be further updates from them once they have unraveled it further.
I have 5.3 uninstalled and replaced iit with 6, works better for me. But yes, it happens to me in 5.3. Dialogs like Configure Krita and Brush Editor, they do not popping up as smoothly. It shows a white box for some mili seconds before the content appears. Also, when i moving the dockers around when they are floating, there is a noticable lag, like, it don’t follow the mouse cursor right away, only when the mouse move tens of pixels away, then the docker snap to the cursor. The most annoying thing for me is the brush lag/snap in the end strokes. The shape of the resulting stroke come out as expected, but it just dont come out right away after i finish the strokes.
Yes, I have a Huion Tablet, but I have tried it without the tablet using just my mouse and the issue continues. I don’t have Powertoys or Google Drive Desktop installed either.
Anyone else experiences moving canvas seem to be little laggy 6.0 compared to 5.2
There was some sort of canvas smoothing that you could turn off but I cant find it in 6.0
