Krita 5.3 has slow UI on Windows

Hi, all!

Could you please test the package from this post? I think I have managed to fix the slow UI issue:

I’m unfortunately experiencing the same lag as the other users in this thread, testing out this build resolves the UI lag, however the lag when drawing on the canvas still persists. I do not have Powertoys or Google Drive installed. I’m going to tinker around with this more and if I find something that works I’ll let you all know.

Specifications:

OS: Windows 11 Enterprise 23H2

Processor: Intel i9-13900KF

Installed RAM: 32.0 GB

Graphics Card: NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4070 Ti

Could you please make a video of thin non-UI lag?

Why my issue with laggy 6.0 was moved here?

5.3 is overall one big lag. ui is lagging, brushes are slow, canvas is unresponsive.
in 6.0 there is just slight lag like canvas smoothing is forced on. But otherwise works pretty good.

I’m using windows 11 on Asus vivobook S15 and it’s lagging like crazy. I couldn’t even click on help button without it being at the verge of crashing and fans blaring. Everything is so slow and the program suddenly no longer detect my brushes either. (I downloaded through the website, not steam)

Your 5.4 works great. Even better than 6.0 and 5.3 tested after 5.4 performs similar to 6.0(thats mean not horrible).

Overall brushes are littlebit more responsive in 5.2.3 but maybe thats because of standalone or new stabilizers.

Could you please check this package?

If it works fine, we will make a fixup release next week. Until then you can use this package (it is almost identical to the 5.3.0, just might have a few untranslated strings.

I tried the build you attached and it’s working! no lag from the UI nor my brush strokes so far. Thank you

:orange_heart: My input, specs and the new build!:star_struck:

I have experienced the same symptoms as everyone else: an overall sluggish UI – not in the initial dialogs before opening a document, but in menus and other dialogs (like opening the settings).

Then there was the lagging and slow rendering when drawing: the brush outline would linger for almost a second after I lifted the stylus from the display.

It felt like a total anticlimax. I had been so excited about 5.3, really looking forward to it, but instead I had a long night of searching for clues. Was it me? My PC? The display? I tried everything – removing all plugins, killing background apps, uninstalling PowerToys, rebooting, and so on – but nothing helped. There might have been a tiny improvement after removing PowerToys, but not enough to make a real difference.

My specs:

  • HP EliteBook 840 G6

  • 32 GB RAM

  • Windows 11

  • Intel UHD Graphics 620

  • Shader Model 6.5

  • Microsoft DirectX 12

  • Vulkan 1.3.215

  • Huion Kamvas 16 Pro (2.5K)

A new build…

I just downloaded and installed the new build (5.4) and it works perfectly – no lag when drawing, and the menus are quick and snappy again.

Awesome job, and such fast work – talk about saving the day! I’ll keep posting if I run into any issues, but for now everything feels smooth and stable.

And again, thank you for such an amazing app. Krita means the world to me – thank you!

The whole problem was caused by the way how Qt handles accessibility/automation requests from Windows. That is, if you have any accessibility features enabled, or some other automation software (like AutoHotKey), it could trigger the issue in Krita.

Disabling the PowerToys modules solved the problem for me. One of the modules “FancyZones” is conflicting with Krita.
”brush strokes have a delay at the end”

I was just about to record a demonstration but strangely it seems the problem has resolved itself after restarting my computer which makes me think it may have been something I had open in the background. Unsure. The build you posted is working perfect now! Sorry to mislead

Hi! I’m running an AutoHotkey in the background, and the Google Drive app (used for synchronising some directories with the cloud). Stopping Google Drive alone fixes the perf. degradation in Krita UI, so it seems that my AutoHotKey key remapping script doesn’t cause any problem for Krita.

Just wanted to mention this because this behaviour doesn’t seem to align with your explanation of the root cause of the perf degradation. I also don’t understand how Google Drive app fits into the category of accessibility/automation requests producer apps, unless the way it interacts with the filesystem does fall into that category?

Wanted to add that having TranslucentTB enabled also seem to cause krita’s UI to slow down

Steam version of 5.4 when?

Presumably you’re asking when this fix will be released. That should be next week and will be 5.3.1, not 5.4.

I would guess that Google Drive wants to integrate itself into the Windows shell and Office like OneDrive does. Those kinds of hacks often abuse accessibility to do their work.

Same problem here.

5.3.0 UI lags. Brush strokes are slow. Closing Google Drive solves the problem.
Prevoius 5.2.16 works well with Google Drive app on.

Hi, all!

Please download the upcoming Krita 5.3.1 packages, it has the fix for the slowdown: link

Same for me, I’m on windows 11, intel core ultra 9 and intel arc 140T, the UI is very slow, when I launch the app, after the splash screen, there is a long white screen before getting to the welcome screen, and if I ever want to create a new window by going to window → new window, either it crashes, or it takes probably between 30 seconds to a minute to create the new window. I don’t use google drive nor autohotkey, but I probably have automation softwares that are packed with my laptop ( honor workstation and pc manager ). I’m looking forward to test the next update !
