Krita UI Redesign

This has some really nice designs and ideas! Great work Dmitry! Some things could in my opinion be a bit more space efficient, like the sliders not taking up as much space, slightly slimmer tabs, slightly slimmer toolbox, slimmer toolbar and so on: because I want as much canvas space as possible. (Though I looove a lot of the padding and extra air for the colour wheel, buttons and stuff!) I would really like a direction similar to this!!

Edit, some extra thoughts: I do like current icons and the canvas not having a shadow and so on. But the whole feeling of this UI and the way things feel seperated but clear and pleasing is what I like best about the mockup! I think keeping a lot of the parts of the current, but having it feel like this mockup is a nice way to go. I feel this is a great picture to gain inspiration from to improve the feeling Krita has. Like the way the colour wheel looks is fantastic! And I think the tabs here are really really cool and so on! There are many great ideas here!

Many thanks! I actually have a lot of ideas. And there is a holistic understanding of the interface.
Hope you watched the presentation and the pictures. Do not worry about the size of the interface. It is planned that it will be scalable. In this version, the interface has a scale 125%. Scalable interface is extremely important for comfortable work on devices with screens of different sizes. For example, for a 14-inch laptop, this is the most convenient size.

Yeah that is brilliant! I love how you solved the full screen/mobile variants! Krita would greatly benefit having something like that with the new android releases!
Is the “desired editing mode in the upper-left corner.” the same as the current workspaces, but with different toolbars than default?

The mock is wonderful. If I may provide some suggestion:

The mock is really a drastic change in the interface of krita, it is definitely pretty but if you drop a existing krita users with this one fine day, I am pretty sure he will be feeling that he has come to some unknown place and that will surely waste his time relearning everything. That is the reason i had suggested making the changes gradual and slow. I am not saying this should not be suggested or done. i am saying that this feels completely different so much so that the existing users might find it a jarring change.

It might also be wonderful if you had put explanation of certain new icons and buttons, they may represent some existing feature in Krita but it is not clear which one in your mock.

Lastly please keep the mocks and discussion in the original thread.(I am moving this there for now)

Before closing this thread, I just want to check to see if anyone has further discussed the “auto-hide” feature for the UI. Although I might find such a feature useful, I want to know what other users might think.

Yes, I believe that krita requires a radical change. The krita interface got stuck in the early 2000s. Do not get me wrong, I used krita for 3 years and was quite pleased. But time is running out. No one has radically changed the interface. During this time, the blender was redone 2 times. So why is krita worse? I am for ease of use, convenience and stylish appearance.

Blender has a lot more funds and developers than Krita so it is unfair to compare both.

Regarding the look of the Ui it may look early 2000 to you but that is subjective assessment. Nevertheless it is not that anybody is stopping the redesign. it is why we are are having this discussion here

In general the change should be gradual and not sudden or drastic because:

  • It gives time for people to adapt to new changes in UI at a comfortable pace. Remember krita is also used by kids and people who are just starting their digital art journey. It is also used by super busy professionals who don’t have time to spare learning new Ui paradigm just because we wanted to jump on a design trend and redo our UI.
  • It gives ample time for people to test new feature and may be change the course of the redesign as we go forward. Making a sudden big change and then reverting it because of user backlash is stupidity. hence make small amount of changes give time to the users to get accustomed to it, gather feedback and then make more changes based on that feedback. This should be the strategy.

Disclaimer: I am not against your design or any redesign. All I am saying it give it time and take it slow.

I don’t think that is discussed in any case if you can just describe what is auto-hide and how it will help it would be great.

@Dmitry Looks great! I can see a definite Photoshop influence, correct me if I’m wrong. At the moment I would say the circles on Gradient and Pattern Tools are a bit contrasting to the current Krita, and I don’t know how users would interpret them. Aside from that, awesome input!

@Rigognos I think auto-hide would be an interesting idea, it would just need a description of the feature to show how it might work, as I have forgotten a bit!

Now, @raghukamath. I would be reluctant to lock this topic, as I feel it operates more as a feedback/ reference point for mockups to be critiqued, instead of a steady avalanche of ideas poised to swamp incoming readers. (I think the creation of separate topics helped to alleviate some of this strain.)

But I understand your reasoning behind locking this thread, and suffice it to say that I agree with you.

Upon locking this thread, I think it’s important to note the reason, instructions for users who might have ideas/proposals to post, and how long the topic will be closed for.

I would be glad to help out in that respect, just message me.

Cheers

yes we can lock this topic for a months time period. We can discuss things on the separate topics that were opened from this one. you can edit the first post linking to those topics (you have already done it) and also link the google docs, trello board that @slightlyangrydodo made so that users are informed about the current process and have all information.

the topic gets opened automatically after the time period we set so it will not be forgotten.

I’m not saying drop everything and make a new interface. I just offered my own version of the interface. I understand that what I suggested is actually a new program. And from krita there is only a name left. I just want to see how ready you are for change. It’s impossible to quickly create something new, it will take a long time. I understand that too.
As for adaptation, I do not agree. If the program is intuitively simple and built on general principles for graphic editors, you can master the updated program in a couple of days. Especially if you already have experience in graphic editors.
Also, this is not a problem for professionals. Nothing prevents them from using previous versions of the program.
But it certainly will benefit all. Now krita is a rather complicated editor for beginners.
In the end, most users prefer convenience and speed.
I am sure at first there will be many opponents of the new. And this is normal. Do not be afraid of this. As soon as they try something new and truly convenient their dissatisfaction will pass.

Yes, to some extent, there is the influence of Photoshop. Due to my profession, I worked in it for a very long time. But in fact, I focused more on Affinity. Serif managed to make such convenient programs that I was able to master them in a couple of days.

Yes understood. I also didn’t mean that way. All I am saying is it can’t be done in one release, which you also agree, so let us not drag the debate any further. :peace_symbol:

Locking this thread for 1 months time. We have enough mocks and Ideas to work on during this period. There are separate threads made by @fullerhill_art to discuss this further:

If any of the ideas in this thread need to be discussed further then please create a new topic.
After the ideas are exhausted and we are fairly confident to take and discuss new ones, this thread will be the place for brainstorming new ones. This thread will automatically open after one month.

Thank you

I really like this idea, it would keep things organized and small.

Aaaaah… sighs.
This process is forcibly long.
I would be so excited to have a flawless flat UI Redesign for Krita.
One that has a better hierarchy, more finesse(thin tabs, thin option bar…),
better functionality(tabs can be divided into subwindows, with each subwindow capable
to hold one or multiple tabs), better aesthetics, etc.
And it will take a long time realistically speaking.
But hey, I could contribute in the meantime with a mockup of my own.
But I’m learning UI Design, so it’ll take a bit of time first.

Quick curious question @Dmitry.
The mockup you did, how did you build that, or rather which tools exactly helped you build
it ? Adobe Illustrator ? InDesign ? Tell us everything.

The highlighted part needs to go away one day.
And the options bar would look better if it was much thinner.
Of course, this is just from an aesthetic perspective.
