Yes, those icons in the Layer Docker won’t be in Krita, they are just placeholders from Blender
.
Wow, I had A LOT to catch up on. And I agree with what was said about the impact UI has on the experience, and as a Blender 2.8 user for so long, occasionally looking at 2.79 is still shocking at how much sexier it is.
However, I think this information should be compiled. There’s a lot of data here, and a lot of it is really good. Would be a shame if it was lost in the noise.
Thanks! Yes I will try to be more active on this topic in the coming weeks, there are many things to do😅
How are we going to manage this info? Will there be a Google Docs, or are we going to migrate this conversation (or the results of the conversation) into Phabricator Tasks as mentioned?
I dont know if my input helps anything, but I’ve been playing with Krita for Android and I’d like to give my insights so far. This is where the UI will need an overhaul the most. The Android port is still a bit raw, and the last month or so it has evolved drastically from “technically usable” to “usable with tweaks” for basic use as a sketchbook.
What I’d like to mention is the long-term possibility of kritas UI to accomodate portrait mode. heres what the default layout looks like upon opening krita (in portrait orientation):
Its pretty cramped. things like the radial menu are a godsend with such limited screen real estate, and having popup menu alternatives to access things like the layer docker would be amazing. Heres what I was able to come up with for now:
If anything, this started me on the rabbit hole of how crazy customizable krita is, and im still digging to find ways to improve this layout. I just wanted to depict this alternate perspective.
Please use Google Docs; Phabricator Tasks are mostly for when the feature is already decided to be worked on, and you guys are still in the very much planning phase
Also Google Docs are easier to work with with multiple people etc., so I think that now it would be easier to do it there.
@fullerhill_art Are you comfortable with creating a Google Docs document and sharing it with open editing? I think requiring Google accounts is alright (to avoid having a spam bot scan the link on this site and inserting text ads, though I don’t know how common that is).
Seems like an interesting idea! That would be a good platform to try minimalist UI I think…
Personally, I’m not too experienced with multi-user Google Docs, so if someone knows how to make one, feel free. Otherwise, I’m fine to have a look into it.
In terms of format, I remember seeing some existing Krita feature proposal files, I’m assuming a similar layout would be needed?
Cheers
Google Docs Poll
So I have tried to make a poll on which features need a Google Doc.
You are allowed 3 votes. I’m unable to find a poll which allows you to rank options, so this will have to do.
I’m unsure if this is a good method, and there might need to be revision of the topics. This is an experiment
.
Topic Options
- Toolbox Docker Rework
- Docker Navigation + Docker Icons
- Radial Function Menu
- General Landscape UI
- General Portrait UI

(Landscape and Portrait refer to the screen orientation.)
Well, I think I have to elaborate. The reason I use the canvas only mode is not so much to see more of the artwork. It’s because the interface gets in my way when I do quick and exaggerated arm strokes. I lost count of how many times I accidentally put a ruler on the canvas, changed zoom, color, layer, resized the docker area or something else because I clicked something in one of the dockers or somewhere else in the interface while painting rapidly. However, I often still need to know on which layer I’m on, so I constantly toggle canvas only mode on and off. When I could configure some dockers to keep floating above the canvas even in canvas only mode, that would be great. I imagined that the docker would then be transparent when “disabled” and opaque when “enabled” so I don’t accidentally click something on it (what my initial problem was). Although I guess no one but me needs a feature like that x3.
Hi
Concerning google doc, it’s something useful but very closed:
- data hosted you don’t know how by a big compagny
- need google user account
- you don’t really know what google does with all the data (from the document and users), and how
- services are based on proprietary closed-source software
As Krita is an open source project and try to be not dependent of companies (this is why Krita git repository is not primarily hosted github if I understood explanation) it could be good thing to use open source services ![]()
You can find alternative to these services on Framasoft
In few word (but the best it took take a look on Framasoft website and/or wikipedia) Framasoft is a nonprofit organization that promote open source software, open culture and free cloud services based on open source software.
In their referenced bookmark, you can find Krita and Pepper & Carrot for exemple ![]()
https://framalibre.org/recherche-par-crit-res?keys=krita
You will find many online collaborating tools that you can easily use to organize all the collaborative works that will come with the Krita UI Redesign:
Most of them I think don’t need account: just share the link created to your project (but you can always create one if you want)
Hope these few links can help open source projects (Krita and others
)
![]()
Note: some similar service may exists on another place, I gave Framasoft link because this is the only one I know and there’s a very complete list of services and a strong ethic about “freedom”
Grum999
Hmm, by transparent do you mean still partially visible? So that the dockers are still visible, but can’t be touched? I guess that is a very unique use-case to be honest
.
I’m trying to think of other situations this could be useful, maybe as a variation on canvas mode perhaps?
What a nice resource! Thanks for taking the time to share. I would be interested to try it and see if the capabilities are similar to Google Docs; if so then I think it would be a nice substitute
.
Yes of course, otherwise it would make no sense x3.
Gotcha
.
I’m in the process of migrating information from this thread to a Framapad, as per @Grum999 's suggestion. It will take me quite a while, and there might be information missing, but I’ll post it here as soon as I finish the first draft, and iterate later on there. There really is a LOT of stuff here!
Thankyou so much! Yes this topic had a lot of different contributions
.
I might not use Framapad, I’m having quite a lot of issues with it, I’m afraid ![]()
I’ll send the Google Docs link in a short while, it is a better service (and this is coming from someone who is trying to detach themselves from Google as well).
I’m still structuring everything, might take me a few hours.
Oh no, at least you gave it shot anyway…
In regards to the recent poll:
- Quite surprising is a strong desire for an overall Docker update, if that’s what I’m gathering from the poll. Obviously this data isn’t very scientific, but interesting nonetheless.
- Toolbox Docker is not so surprising considering this was the original idea of this thread
. - Radial Function menu is also very popular.
Discussion:
From this limited poll I’m presuming Docker navigation should be investigated first. Given the preceding discussion regarding this topic, optimisation of docker layouts and icons should be considered?
Also @slightlyangrydodo, as you’re compiling this info, would it help to have the topics structured in order of this poll result?
From there, the Google Doc can probably be broken into separate Docs as more information is added.
Cheers
I don’t think that splitting up the documents would do much good, as it would be against the whole purpose of gathering the useful information in one place!
However, I’ll take into account your poll, and order it based on that!
Yep, sounds like a good idea when you think of it like that aha!
