Layers docker won't let me drag layers around

I’m on Linux.

My mouse turns into a red cancel symbol whenever I try to drag layers up and down. The layers in question are not locked or anything, at least not to my knowledge. I am able to rearrange them just fine with the up and down buttons on the docker. Any insight on this issue?

Hello @naparts and welcome to the forum

Which Linux distribution are you using and which version of krita?

Where did you get krita form and how is it installed?
(e.g. distro repo, snap, flatpack, appimage.)

Have you used krita for a long time and has this problem always existed?
If the problem hasn’t always existed, what is the history of the problem development?
(e.g. Did it happen as soon as you upgraded the krita version number or after you upgraded your Linux distribution?)

A similar problem was reported by @kazarts in a topic reply here:
Krita will not rearrange Keyframes in the timeline or Storyboard docker - #6 by kazarts

Please read that topic and see if it is also applicable to you and if the suggested attempt at a solution works for you, here:
Krita will not rearrange Keyframes in the timeline or Storyboard docker - #12 by AhabGreybeard
If you don’t know animating in krita then don’t worry about trying the animation actions.

I’m using EndeavourOS and Krita version 5.1.5.

I use Krita via appimage.

I have been using Krita for 3 years now and this issue only popped up today, inexplicably. Unknown if I pressed a hotkey or something.

It may be a problem related to an OS update, which is worrying.
I run Debian 10, which has now become archaic so I think that won’t be a problem for me.

@kayleeJ fixed the problem on Arch by resinstalling the OS. That is drastic though.
Have you tried the thing I suggested?

the appimage doesn’t seem to be creating subfolders in the designated .home folder when it launches. it loads the system configuration.

The local .home folder should be called (in your case):
krita-5.1.5-x86_64.appimage.home

This is why I suggested renaming it to give it a shorter name

Thank you. The appimage now successfully creates the subfolders and loads its own environment as expected. However, attempting to re-arrange layers still causes a red cancel icon to appear and I am unable to do so.

So, that’s a little experiment that didn’t work :frowning:
Do you remember if there was a system update just before this problem started to happen?
I’m thinking about the user who fixed it by reinstalling their Arch installation but that is drastic.

I’m sorry but I can’t think of anything else and this is definitely an area for developers to consider.

Can you show us a screenshot or a video where this happens. Please include the entire Krita interface.

Thank you for your assistance. I ended up learning something about Krita.

You can see the layers docker on the right. I am attempting to drag a layer into a new position.

Sorry for asking so many questions. Does this happen with all the file or only this file? Since this is a photo and not a screen-shot, is it not exactly clear where you are dropping the layers. The secont layer seems like a sub layer.

This happens with every file on this operating system.

I had a Linux Mint 21.1 barebones system SSD that I hadn’t looked at for 4 weeks so I’ve booted it up and the 5.1.5 appimage ran with none of the problems encountered by others as mentioned so far.
Then I did a full upgrade (lots of updated packages and an updated kernel) then restarted and it still has no problems with the 5.1.5 appimage.

@naparts Do you remember if there was a system update just before this problem started for you?

I’m afraid I can’t remember.
