Learning Krita through a master copy - new here

Hi. I recently decided to get back into digital art making (many many moons ago experimented with 3D brushes, spectral mix in Mypaint but wasn’t happy with performance, etc.) to further my desire to not only keep my art hand in practice but hopefully help in my game dev work. Anyhow, I’m traditionally trained and decided to try to use Krita like how I would paint a portrait in the traditional method… and overall I came away happy with how it performed. There are a few ‘digital’ quirks to overcome but nothing like tools from yesteryears. I used a base three layer method as that’s how I would paint in real life, where I created a ground tone, then do a quick underpainting, then lay in opaque/transparencies using optical effects for the in between tones, while fixing proportions, etc. I think it came out alright! I can push it to look more ‘accurate’ to the original but that wasn’t the intent… anyhow, hope you enjoy the series of images from the start to the end. Oh, and a big thank you to the Krita team for making a very solid piece of software for artists!

 Hello @revjhb, and welcome to the forum!

Since you had chosen the wrong category for your picture, I moved it to our category for finished artworks. Would you please be so kind to post your works in one of the following categories under the main category artworks in the future, this helps to keep the forum organized and reduces the effort for the maintenance of the forum. Thank you!

Here is the list of categories we currently offer for posting artworks:
Work In Progress for not yet finished artworks

Finished Artworks for finished works

Animations for animations

sketchbook for sketches you want to share with us

NSFW (sensitive content)

Traditional for works on traditional media such as canvas, cardboard, paper, etc., without the requirement that it be painted with Krita.

Ah, thanks! I jumped the gun and put it under the wrong category.

Don’t worry, you won’t be the last one to do this…

Awesome work! And a great way to get to know Krita. (I want to do more master copies myself.)

By the way, you may have already come across some of these resources, but there are a ton of brush packs available on krita-artists… if you feel like tumbling down that particular rabbit hole  … though I know I intentionally avoided anything but the default brushes for a while just to get my bearings, haha. (I’m still pretty new to Krita myself – been using it for a few months now.)

In particular, coming from a traditional background and following a more traditional process, you might find the Memileo Impasto Brushes interesting. I’ve barely scratched the surface with them myself, but I’ve seen some really impressive work done with them!

In any case, welcome!

Thanks, ktf! I have DLed the Memileo pack and will be using them for more modern, abstract works so expect some thick layers soon.
