Memileo Impasto Brushes

Thick paint/impasto style RGBA brushes.

Here are some brushes that tries to imitate some thick paint features. The light direction is baked into the animated brush tips to make it appear as if the light shines from a fixed angle (roughly).

After about a year of experimenting and tweaking these off and on, I think they are done. Big thanks to everyone who gave feedback and for the wonderful paintings posted in the WIP thread. :sparkles:
And thanks to the excellent Krita developers, good stuff!

These brushes won’t work correctly when the canvas is mirrored. (Light direction gets flipped upside down.) Workaround by opening the Brush Editor and activate the ‘Mirror’ option, set it to vertically mirror only and uncheck ‘Enable Pen Settings’.

On Linux: If you experience issues installing the bundle - make sure you’re running the official appimage or community flatpak build of Krita.

For nerds and curious birds

Some alternative brush settings that will work well:

01 Brush and 10 Knife:

  • Set Colour Rate to 0 for a blending brush.

01 Brush:

  • Increase Colour Rate for a less smeary brush.
  • Decrease texture pattern strength to around 60% for a less dense brush.

Add Colour Rate to the popup palette sidecar to quickly adjust it on the fly:

02 03 04 05 08 09 Knife:

For a blending brush:

  • Disable Scatter
  • Set Smudge mode to Dulling (Under Smudge Length)
  • Set Colour Rate to 0
  • For brush 08 you can also disable the Spacing option

To make the textures and brush strokes in general pop a little extra you can add Unsharp Mask as a filter mask or filter layer. (Which values to use will depend on picture size and taste.)

I would love to pay for these, but your gumroad only accepts credit card, which I do not have. Is there a way to leave a donation?

The brushes you shared until now have been a real eye opener to me, they really expanded what is possible with impasto in Krita, or any software for that matter. Thanks so much for doing the hard work and sharing the brushes with us Krita users.

No, I don’t really have anything else set up at the moment. I’ll look into adding a paypal in the future (but not today ^^).

Cheers!

thanks @emilm. I did a little playing, but have to wait to heal before I can get into the real playing with them. Love them.

Hi,

I bought the bundle and gumroad, and imported the bundle into Krita, but it appears to be empty. No new brushes have been added and when I filter by “memileo Impasto Brushes” the selection is empty.

What am I doing wrong?

@Bro666 Are you running the latest version of Krita (5.2.2+) and appimage if you’re on Linux?
If you are you could try remove the resourcecache.sqlite from your krita resource folder to have it rebuild on startup.

md5 for the bundle: a9e2841a45966c99133be7c115694b46

Thanks for getting in touch so soon.

@Bro666 Are you running the latest version of Krita (5.2.2+) and appimage if you’re on Linux?

Latest version yes, but from Arch repos.

If you are you could try remove the resourcecache.sqlite from your krita resource folder to have it rebuild on startup.

This did not work.

Appimage worked though! Will just have to assume the Arch package is broken.

Thanks!

Most of the krita packages from all the distributions repository have quirks and bugs. This is because the Qt version that krita uses has been patched for several bugs, these patches are not yet in Upstream Qt. The distributions do not patch Qt for krita so you get weird bugs. That is why officially krita only supports official appimages.

Love this brush, although it causes my old computer to be a bit slower when opening krita

Thank you for these amazing brushes! I can’t imagine the amount of work you put into these to get them to feel this way. I don’t have to run Artrage in wine anymore!
