Rotating light brushtips WIP

Finnished bundle: Memileo Impasto Brushes

Some experiments with animated RGBA brushtips, made using a rotating light in Blender. Rotation set to Drawing angle in Krita. gih export with the first dimensions Selection mode set to Angular. That way the light directions stays roughly the same, regardless of brush stroke direction.

A limitation with this setup is that it doesn’t work correctly when the canvas is mirrored. Workaround by activating the mirror sensor in the Brush Editor.

old test bundles

Here are some bundles with brushes to try:

memileo_360light_05.bundle - Google Drive

memileo_360light_06.bundle - Google Drive

memileo_360light_07.bundle - Google Drive

Older bundle: memileo_360light_04.bundle - Google Drive

(No proper icons yet.)

For whatever reason memileo 360light A 4-dab.kpp and memileo 360light B 4-dab.kpp doesn’t work on my linux install (openSUSE tumbleweed), nor can I create any brush preset with memileo_360light_A_01-random.gih that works on linux. :man_shrugging: Anyone got any idea on why it’s cursed?

WOW! it’s cool, it blends and rotates pretty dope in my opinion

,

Well I was worried about the performance but i was making fast strokes and has 0 lag with my potato Thinkpad hahah

I’m quoting @RamonM , the brush expert, if he test them too

Oh, nice!!!

Great work! They are so much fun to play with.

I can confirm that on 5.1.5 on Linux one of the brushtips is broken (presets including it are not imported, I can use it, but saving a preset fails). This bug seems to be solved though, as on nightly build everything works fine.

They also work nicely with the WIP “wet blending modes” @SirPigeonz was working on some time ago. Not sure if that’s how paint behaves, but the blending is somewhat cool:

on my Nightly 5.2.0 the brushtips work perfectly.
I’m a sucker for oil looking paintbrushes and was lacking a good impasto brush(had to jump to other software to get that look). Thanks for the work you did!! :two_hearts:

This looks really cool! I’ve downloaded but not tried it yet.

Regarding the problems mentioned, I did identify something a while ago which I detailed in this post:

Looking at the file sizes in your bundle I think it could be the same problem.

wow, just a couple of images and i am amazed. I will try them asap. Sure!

@wojtryb Ah! Yes they work in both nightly builds for me as well. Thanks.

@Mythmaker Yes it sounds like the same issue. Nice detective work. :+1:

These are phenomenal brushes @emilm
Thanks a lot for your time and work.

I’m working on transfering my personal PS brushes (plus some other packs) to Krita, and this bundle really got me thinking to go back and make all the brushtips as RGBA tips.

Great work!

That’s fantastic! Thank you so much!

My first impressions:

  • Good performance
  • Very flexible
  • And easy to be used

For me is a new open door because i have never used Alpha Darken. What that blending mode is able to do? i need to investigate or maybe the community can help me, thanks in advance. Also The way you get volume in the first brush is really nice. It remembers me when you press harder and paint (thick) is accumulating in the edges. So I love it. This would be like soft oil brush with sable hair. in Hog hair bristles are more obvious.

Is a really smart idea. And providing the Template is a plus because now everybody can create new brushtips. Congratulations

You really unlocked the power of lightness map with this brush. :+1:

my 2 cents:

  1. If we create brushtips , the external parts outside the dotted lines produce weird artifacts when rotating. Of course this is extreme i normally paint more flat. (B4- Flat2 used here with blue strokes)
  2. This brushtip works really well in big size with RGBA with pixel brush engine. not color smudge. 600px ( I used here the RGBA 02 Thickpaint.)
I think it could be interesting to test it with masked brushes too

I used Alpha Darken blending mode to get a little more canvas texture to blend in when used in a setup like this: Alpha Bumpmap Impasto Template
(The canvas texture only version.)

Very useful feedback.
I’ll try adjust the shape later. Thank you.

I was testing these yesterday too, got the same perception.
One thing i did notice though, its possible to minimize this “separation” effect on the tip by playing around with contrast and brightness in the tip, when in lightness map mode. From things i tested, i notice brushtips up to 50% grey, have less of lighting separation, more subtle impasto effect.

A second point to note, you can still use the RGBA tip as mask. Although, lag might be heavy, depending on the tips used. Its possible to get a bump in the lighting, if that’s a desired effect.

As for blending modes, i really like Parallel. Offers a nice mix of colors while keeping textures clear, even though it requires some after work for adjustments.

That was some fine work @emilm

Testing saving variants. it doesn´t recognize the saved presets so i verify too what iread some posts ago. Verified: saved variants and bundle brushes are in Krita next. (Build #1991 3rd may.)

Lightness isn’t available for tips when used as a mask - it’s locked to alpha mask. So only the primary tip can provide values for thickness effects.

True. My mistake.

You can use RGBA WITH a mask.

Thanks for pointing it out @Mythmaker
