Lion statue


Lion stone statues are common decorations in front of the gates of Chinese temples in Taiwan. They come in many shapes, but they are essentially lions. There are no lions in China or Taiwan, and ancient people only heard of them in myths, so they could only imagine them based on the descriptions in the stories, which eventually led to this strange lion shape.

Nicely rendered, and insightful description. Can’t even imagine carving in stone, where the process is only subtractive.

You can do it too. I didn’t keep track of the time. I just painted when I had time. It took me several days to finish. I used the brushes linked below.
