Microsoft Surface Pro Review

I do most all of my artwork on an XP-Pen 16" tablet with a desktop PC. But I got the Microsoft surface pro with intentions of doing plein air digital art when traveling. I got the most powerful one they have and their best pen (which I don’t like). I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s simply not really designed for serious digital artwork. It just doesn’t respond and feel as nice as the XP… which was way cheaper btw. This is just my opinion and experience with the Surface Pro. I haven’t really heard anyone else talk about using it for artwork.

Hey, thanks for sharing. Sounds like a refund?

I know many artists choose Apple devices for mobile painting, but if I recall correctly there’s no Krita for iOS (yet?).

Huion has pen computers too, but I think the reviews for them were mixed.

Too late for a refund. I just use it for surfing tablet now Lol. Apple doesn’t allow non-proprietary software so Krita is out for iOS users. I love my XP-Pen screen tablet, but they don’t make an all-in-one. Huion and Wacom do. I may check out Huion’s Kamvas stand alone.

I’m currently using krita on huion slate, and it’s very functional and responsive. But I wouldn’t consider it for serious work.

I’m sorry to hear bout your woes with surface pro.

Out of curiosity, what are your specs on your desktop computer? Specifically what’s your video card?

@edgarej It’s a gaming HP Intel i7, 32GB ram, Geforce RTX 3060 I think… not sure.

How is the stylus lag on the surface pro?

I think they have an android tablet which can run krita. XPPen Magic Drawing Pad: The Ultimate Standalone Android Drawing Tablet, No Computer Needed | XPPen

Here is its review

Hi

I have one…
But my experience of Krita on this tablet is not good.

I love Krita on my Linux+XP-Pen Artist Pro 16, but on Android… I can’t tell if it’s Android or the tablet itself, but I was not able to use Krita as expected.

I’ve made a quick review few weeks ago (But I’m not good for review)

My experience on Tab S7+ has been pleasant, I have not gone crazy with super high resolution painting. The only problem i see is that lots of features do not work on android.

So my assumption was surface like devices would be a win win. Hearing a complete opposite view makes me think my decision to go android was right, I had iPad before but the hardware started showing limitations. I have seen some youtubers say that the Pen performance in surface is appaling and probably this is haunting OP.

@raghukamath Oh! I’m gonna have to check that out!! Thanks!

@LLEPPSTER I haven’t noticed any stylus lag, but it does have some more parallax. I don’t have a textured screen protector on it either. It’s pretty slick, which isn’t the best.

Oh dear, that’s a shame!
I got a Surface Pro specifically do to art with Krita. I started off using Krita on my brother’s borrowed chunky laptop with a basic wacom tablet. I wanted to draw directly onto the screen so I researched and decided on the surface pro, because I could do artwork AND video editing, along with general laptop usage.

I thought it was brilliant!!! And still is. I didn’t have any issues with using Krita on it or with the pen. I then bought my Huion Kamvas Pro and used that on a desk with the Surface pro. I haven’t noticed any difference in using Krita run from the Surface Pro or my PC so I guess the big difference is with the touch screen itself.

I have noticed that the Huion is way more sensitive than the Surface. Obviously it has a billion more point pressure receptor thingies, but the pen pressure sensitivity is also set much higher than it was on the Surface Pro.

However, since I got my Kamvas I haven’t done any proper artwork on the Surface Pro so I expect if I did I would notice the difference? I guess before I got used to the all-singing all-dancing Kamvas I thought working on the Surface Pro was great but I had nothing else to compare it to. I never had any issues with pen lag or dodgy pressure sensitivity.

I really like my Kamvas tablet so if they do a stand alone one then I’d assume that might be a good option? I would expect good things from it.

I literally have only gone from Surface Pro, to Kamvas so I don’t have any experience with anything else to recommend anything.

But Surface Pros run on Windows, not android? Out of interest, what hasn’t been good for you about using Krita on a Surface Pro? How was the use not as expected?

Sorry for confusion

I was answering to @raghukamath about XP-Pen tablet “Magic Drawing Pad”

Also if you really want to know what hasn’t been good on the tablet, I’ve provided a link, just take 2 minutes to take a look about the review I’ve made :person_shrugging:

If insisting on windows , for art purpose , i think the standalone huion is the better choice than surface pro, despite the spec being a few generation old. Since the pen which is what is important to us is wayyy better. I think they offer enough ram for krita to ran.

oth, Samsung, XPPen are the android choice [ downside no python plugins] .

For tablets I go for Brad Colbow, for previews and Teoh on Tech/ Parkablogs for indepth [since he does like 1 hour initial and 1 hour after 1 month and other comparison stuff]. Unlike other reviewers this two does look at this tech in artist POV rather than tech nerd POV so less on shiny spec and more on - Is this good to draw on if you are an artist.

I have seen the reviews and I am not really sold on xppen android. sure the xppen tech is in there, but samsung have great performing SOC and has wacom tech. Plus a good software update track record. I would rather suggest cheap samsung tablet rather than Xp pen.

Huion actually botched their android tablet

For real. It was horrendous for how they almost nailed their surface pro like one [only downside was it was a lil bit older gen intel] they botched their android offering by going for the low end price level.

I think Samsung S6-S7 lite are well reviewed in this forum.

The worst is using an off the shelf pen system instead of using their own tech. That pen is pathetic

One thing Brad Colbow does not mention is pen lag.

Its the one thing i noticed immediately when i switched from wacom intuos pen tablet to huion kamvas pro 16 display tablet.

@Grum999 Your experience with the XP-Pen magic tablet is how I would describe how it feels on my Surface Pro, compared to my 15.6 XP screen tablet. I also have a Wacom One that I gave to my sister because I like the way my XP performs much better. I don’t own anything iOS.
