Monthly Art Challenge – August 2023 – Kiki riding a robotic and/or anthropomorphic horse

Hello Krita Artists!

We completed the monthly art challenge for July 2023. Congratulations to the winner, @Elixiah. And congratulations to everyone who participated by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who voted for the entries.

And now It’s time to announce the monthly art challenge for August 2023. @Elixiah has found a way to wind an interesting theme into our annual August Kiki art challenge:

Monthly Art Challenge – August 2023 – Topic: Kiki riding a robotic and/or anthropomorphic horse

“Create a scene that has Kiki riding a robotic and/or anthropomorphic horse. Something that fits right in with Kiki’s look. Painting style and colors are your choice. I think it would be fun for everyone to post at least one of their WIP sketches during the month too.

Rules

  • The concept and idea for the artwork should be your own and not an exact copy from someone or somewhere else.
  • Artwork should be done in Krita. Submissions must be done from scratch in Krita, no paint-over or tracing allowed. Photobashing is allowed only when explicitly specified in the topic.
  • The topic changes every month. Your submission should be somehow related to the topic. And if possible please add a few lines explaining your idea and image.
  • No AI-generated images are allowed, not even partial use of AI and paint over. It is unfair for those who are drawing from scratch.
  • You can post a maximum of 3 entries and also edit the entries until the deadline. All your entries will be clubbed during the vote and you only get one vote. Reply with your entries to this post in this thread.
  • In order to have the image featured, the entries need to be safe for work so please avoid any NSFW or controversial content. The moderators can use their discretion to disqualify the image from the contest with prior notice. Of course the artist will be given the chance to submit an alternate image or change it.
  • The submission will be open until 2023-08-28T01:00:00Z . The topic will be automatically closed and you can check how much time is left at the bottom of the thread.

We will hold a poll at the end from August 28, 2023 to August 30, 2023. The artwork with the most votes will be the winner.

Prize

  • The winner(s) will be featured on this website in the featured row.
  • The winner(s) will have the privilege to set the topic of their liking. If the winner is not available or reachable then the 1st runner up will be asked to provide the topic and challenge
  • The winner will also be awarded the Monthly Art Contest Winner badge 5.

Please spread the word about this contest by posting your artwork on various social media websites with a hashtag – #kritachallenge – if possible, include a link to the forum post.

I hope we will enjoy this exercise so let us begin.

**P.S. Note we can change the rules based on the feedback on this contest and modify the format. Any suggestions are welcome. We can make a new topic in the Site Feedback category for it. Please post only artworks and discussion related to them in this thread.

Note : We have changed the name from Monthly Art Contest to Monthly Art Challenge as it is more of a challenge for learning together rather than a contest, even if there is an award.

Ok! I think I’m done here
Not very sure about the colors… but I like how the whole picture has become!
The title is “Kiki in search of inspiration”.

Ahah yes exactly! Because she can’t find any good ideas about the new project she working on. So Kiki need to go around and try to find the inspiration riding her robot horse named H-23

Finally, finished it! I pretty happy with how it turned out. It was pretty challenging at times but I had of lot of fun making it! Featuring, Kiki’s adventure as a witch with her magic stylus and her worrywart companion, Oswald the horse broomstick.

Finished August Kiki challenge. This was a fun one.

Thank you @Corentin for the background suggestion of Kiki painting her own background. I was stumped on what kind of background would work with this piece.

I could have spent more time on the background, but I’ve been back at work and coming home exhausted! But, I am happy with the exhaust from Blazer as Kiki rides/flies her trusty steed toward exciting adventures! :dizzy:

You’re welcome. Your painting is amazing!
That’s funny because when I suggested that, I didn’t imagine her in a black void and painting everything from scratch like cosmic magic, I imagined her already in an existing background but adding elements to it with her pen. But I’m glad you found something that works for you.

Here’s my finished painting. With improved light and shadow effects on the characters, as best I could (and I’ll also post a final WIP entry about it).

Here’s my finished illustration: Kiki’s overly enthusiastic horseplay transforms the otherwise dark stage into something fantastical—at the expense of the horse!

(I totally forgot we were supposed to post the final piece here instead of on the WIP thread
Lineart and process timelapse here!)
