Monthly Art Challenge – February 2024 – Architectural / Urban Scene

Hello Krita Artists! :wave:

We have completed the Monthly Art Challenge for January 2024. Congratulations to @Elixiah, the winner. And congratulations to everyone who participated by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who voted on the entries.

And now It’s time to announce the Monthly Art Challenge for February 2024.

Monthly Art Challenge – February 2024 – Topic: Architectural / Urban Scene

Details from @Elixiah:

So, for our next challenge, I’d like us to try an architectural / urban scene, like a residential street, downtown, skyscrapers, ghetto, suburbs, rural barns, buildings, etc. Add any extras you want, like people, trees, vehicles, etc. Make it interesting with use of color, light and shadow.

A fun way I like to get ideas and references is to use Map Crunch-Random Street View. If you click on Options, you can check ‘Urban’ for residential/city street views. MapCrunch - Random Street View

Optional Added Challenge

For an optional challenge, try using the lasso selection tool to create most of this months painting. It’s a great way for us to learn some of Krita’s tools, if you’re not already familiar with it, including myself. Here is a link to a simple video on how to use the lasso tool. It’s showing Photoshop, but the tool is the same in Krita. Try adding different textures and color in your selections. Hope it’s a fun one for all of us!

Create Pro Art with Only the Lasso Tool

Please post only artworks and discussion related to submitted artwork in this thread. There is a WIP thread for each monthly art challenge in which you can ask questions and post your works in progress.

Rules

  • The composition should be your own and not an exact copy from someone or somewhere else. If you are using a reference photo taken by anyone other than yourself, please ensure the license allows for its use and include a credit to the photographer with your submission.
  • Artwork should be done in Krita. Submissions must be done from scratch in Krita, no paint-over or tracing allowed. Photobashing is allowed only when explicitly specified in the topic.
  • The topic changes every month. Your submission should be somehow related to the topic. If possible, please add a few lines explaining your idea and image.
  • No AI-generated images are allowed, not even partial use of AI and paint over. It is unfair for those who are drawing from scratch.
  • You can post a maximum of 3 entries and also edit the entries until the deadline. All your entries will be clubbed during the vote and you only get one vote. Reply with your entries to this post in this thread. Please ensure all entries are in the same post.
  • In order to have the image featured, the entries need to be safe for work so please avoid any NSFW or controversial content. The moderators can use their discretion to disqualify the image from the contest with prior notice. Of course, the artist will be given the chance to submit an alternate image or change it.
  • Submissions will be accepted until 2024-02-26T17:00:00Z, at which time the topic will automatically close. You can check how much time is left at the bottom of the thread.

We will hold a poll at the end of the challenge period. The artwork with the most votes will be the winner.

Prize

  • The winner(s) will be featured on this website in the featured artwork row.
  • The winner(s) will have the privilege to set the topic of their liking. If the winner is not available or reachable, then the 1st runner up will be asked to provide the topic and challenge
  • The winner will also be awarded the Monthly Art Contest Winner badge.

Please spread the word about this art challenge by posting your artwork on various social media websites with the hashtag – #KritaChallenge. If possible, include a link to the forum post.

I hope we will enjoy this exercise so let us begin.

**P.S. Note we can change the rules based on the feedback on this contest and modify the format. Any suggestions are welcome. To submit feedback, please create a new topic in the Site Feedback category.

Note : We have changed the title of this event from Monthly Art Contest to Monthly Art Challenge as it is more of a challenge for learning together rather than a contest, even if there is an award.

This is my entry for February’s challenge of an Urban scene. It is inspired by a picture I took on a rainy day while walking along one of the ringroads in my town. I thought the lights and their reflections were fascinating and fit well to an urban scene, where traffic is a part of it. There is still lots for me to learn about Krita and I tried the lasso tool, althogh maybe too late in the process, so I decided not to include that here.

I mainly used the lasso tool, but some parts (textured coloring and light in the night version) were made using Awez Pencil Scratch N’ Hatch Brushes, found there :

Yay, I got to do a plein air study! I’m way too giddy for this, lol;

neighborhood study from my apartment window;

I couldn’t really get into the nitty-gritty of the suburban architecture, but for a quick study I think it will do. Oh yeah… here’s my other entry, haha.

Brutalism architecture;

My entry for February’s challenge. I learned quite a bit on this one. I used the lasso tool quite a bit, but also the fill brush, which does the same thing except it fills with color at the same time. New for me! Pretty handy. Thanks for the tip @Iruhas ! It was also my first time using the perspective assistant. That’s pretty cool too. I may have to do another painting to try it out more :slight_smile:

My second entry. This was actually the first entry I started, but lost interest and quit. I came back to it and experimented with different colors and light directions before settling on this one. I used the lasso tool a lot on this one and tried to not fuss over accuracy. I learned a lot about where the selection tools are handy and where they aren’t. I also learned a lot more about the use of pattern fills in selections and transforming them. (I twisted and turned that brick pattern all over the place before finally figuring it out LOL) This is something I would not have tackled if it were not in this challenge. Ok, I feel like I’ve talked everyone’s ears off enough. :slight_smile:

Hi everyone.

Here’s my post for the February challenge.

The artwork depicts Durga Puja, a festival celebrated in India and primarily in Kolkata. I wanted to capture the spirit and vibe of the city as everyone awaits for this festival all year long. The festival signifies the victory of good over evel and and also as a motherly power behind all life forms.

I created the overall shapes with lasso and flat brush and textured with medium grain and soft brushes. For the mood, I wanted the scene to look cool and glittering with lights, along with the busy roads, traffic and crowd that is evident during the festival.

I highly respect the result of this voting Monthly Art Challenge WIPs and Discussion Thread – February 2024 - #49 by Iruhas , therefore, I have decided not to include these 2 pictures for this month’s entry. I did not delete this so that the conversation in the WIP topic discussing this post does not lose its context. Thank you for all of your feedback, and I apologize for the confusion caused by me.

The intended pictures

My first entry: Random rural scenery

Photo reference and what I thought

You can find reference photos at https://www.mapcrunch.com/

I tried to maximize the use of brushes that have shape engine such as the one in Iruhas 6 main brushes. Since I like sharp edges, I left it that way. And for variation I just played with the opacity.
:digital_pen:

My second entry: Harvesting Bamboo

What is it?

Monthly Art Challenge WIPs and Discussion Thread – February 2024 - #24 by Iruhas
The reference for my 2nd picture is from a photo of my front yard that I took using my smartphone. Actually it’s my neighbor’s land and there are many kinds of tropical trees, such as Rambutan trees, Salak trees, Banana trees, Coconut trees, and Bamboo trees (they grow wildly), and many more. That is the condition after the process of cutting down the bamboo trees that will later be used as material to make a house, you can see the condition is very full of leaves, some of which get into the house because of the wind (and it is very itchy). But the condition did not last long, because the next day everything was taken care of until it was neat and clean as before.
If anyone asks where the building is, look at the white part on the left side of the picture, it is the roof of my neighbor’s house which is located under a low cliff.

I feel guilty for starting a strictly off-topic discussion so I moved it to where it should be.
