Monthly Art Challenge – October 2024 Topic: “Buried, Stuck, or otherwise Swallowed”

Hello Krita Artists

The Monthly Art Challenge for September 2024 is complete. Congratulations to @Dott, the winner. And congratulations to everyone who participated by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who voted for the entries.

Monthly Art Challenge – October 2024 – Topic: “Buried, Stuck, or otherwise Swallowed”

  • The idea here is that your main subject should be under or inside of something (so something like: Debris, Mud, Snow, Sand, Mountains, Trash, Clothes, Rocks, Cats, etc.).
  • The main subject may be anything living or not-living; big or small (an Animal, a Corpse, a Building, a Cup, etc.).
  • The main subject should be covered by something but have enough key elements visible so as to be recognizable.
  • The aim here is to convey a sense of immobility by only showing a portion of the subject. The immobility presented may be one showing distress, peace, wonder, intrigue, etc.

As for the optional challenge: since “Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror” has just started airing, try to somehow incorporate a spiral or two into your piece. It can be as either a compositional element or as an actual object in the piece (though it doesn’t have to be a prominent feature).

Please post only artworks and discussion related to submitted artwork in this thread. There is a WIP thread for each monthly art challenge in which you can ask questions and post your works in progress.

Monthly Art Challenge WIPs and Discussion Thread – October 2024

Rules

  • The composition should be your own and not an exact copy from someone or somewhere else. If you are using a reference photo taken by anyone other than yourself, please ensure the license allows for its use and include a credit to the photographer with your submission.
  • Artwork should be done in Krita. Submissions must be done from scratch in Krita, no paint-over or tracing allowed. Photobashing is allowed only when explicitly specified in the topic.
  • The topic changes every month. Your submission should be somehow related to the topic. If possible, please add a few lines explaining your idea and image.
  • No AI-generated images are allowed, not even partial use of AI and paint over. It is unfair for those who are drawing from scratch.
  • You can post a maximum of 3 entries and also edit the entries until the deadline. All your entries will be clubbed during the vote and you only get one vote. Reply with your entries to this post in this thread. All entries must appear in a single post. Please do not post your submissions in any other category on Krita-Artists until voting has closed and the winner is declared.
  • In order to have the image featured, the entries need to be safe for work so please avoid any NSFW or controversial content. The moderators can use their discretion to disqualify the image from the contest with prior notice. Of course, the artist will be given the chance to submit an alternate image or change it.
  • Submissions will be accepted until 2024-10-28T16:00:00Z, at which time the topic will automatically close. You can check how much time is left at the bottom of the thread.

We will hold a poll at the end of the challenge period. The artwork with the most votes will be the winner.

Prize

  • The winner will be featured on this website in the featured artwork row.
  • The winner will have the privilege to set the topic of their liking. If the winner is not available or reachable, then the 1st runner up will be asked to provide the topic and challenge
  • The winner will also be awarded the Monthly Art Contest Winner badge.

Please spread the word about this art challenge by posting your artwork on various social media websites with the hashtag – #KritaChallenge. If possible, include a link to the forum post.

I hope we will enjoy this exercise so let us begin.

P.S. Note we can change the rules based on the feedback on this contest and modify the format. Any suggestions are welcome. To submit feedback, please create a new topic in the Site Feedback category.

Hello everyone! Will I really be the first to launch my entry this month? :upside_down_face: Well then, here it is…

It’s kind of a mind game with the theme, as it looks like it’s a corpse trying to get out of the grave, when in reality, if you know Thing from The Addams Family, no one needed to be buried to shoot that scene!
I tried to render that old 50es-60es horror movie feeling, I hope you like it…
Fonts used: Ghoulish Fright AOE (100% free on dafont.com) for the title and Impact and Bradley Hand ITC (included in Windows) for the rest.

“Buried, But Not For Long”
My entry for this month’s challenge. More Halloweeny than my other one. Mostly from imagination, but a few ideas gleaned here and there. The little red things in there for some contrast. I like painting creepy and grungy

Hello everyone! Here is mine, Deadman! I always liked Deadman as a comic book character especially in October. He could take control of people’s bodies, but every once in a while he would get stuck, which I always thought made the story more interesting…

Oh? I didn’t know that character at all! :open_mouth: He sounds interesting indeed! Why did they not make a movie yet?

Ha! I bet there must be something in development from James Gunn, he’s been popping up in the comics quite a bit lately so fingers crossed!!

Here’s my entry for this month’s challenge. It’s my first time posting here so I hope it fits the theme.
My Idea was something like a dragon buried in gold. But as it’s the spooky month, I thought candy would be more fitting. Plus, what use does a dragon have with gold anyways?

Thank you!

Hello, here is my entry. I used some brushes from Enrico Guarnieri “Expansion” Pack.

Here is my only painting for this month… this took more time than usual to get to a place I was happy enough with moving it over into the ‘finished’ section. I think it captures the peaceful buried feeling as well as having swirls all over the place… even though some of them are rather subtle. I hope it captures the grandeur and depth I was going for…

I think the ship does add a nice bit to the overall structure, great suggestion Dott! I tried the chest upside down with the octo inside… at the end of the day (or month) I think this speaks more to me. :person_shrugging:

I’m not sure it’s done yet, but I wanted to get this posted in case the end of the month gets crazy and I don’t have time to revisit it.

“Tomorrow, contest… I’m so finished.”

A child unable to sleep due to nerves, an infinite flock of sheep, the window outside growing brighter, and despair.

I was working on this piece at my own pace and happened to get sick, but I managed to finish it just in time!
