Monthly Art Challenge – October 2024 – Topic: “Buried, Stuck, or otherwise Swallowed”

Interesting topic and challenge @Dott! I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with for this one!

My first thought was to do an underwater vista with a dark cave, sunlight streaming in from above, bright plants & fish, and scuba divers who have swam right past a sunken treasure. The fish near the surface will subtly bring in the spirals and once I added the octopus over the treasure there were more opportunities for those with the arms (legs?).

I Googled up the “Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror”, and it’s, um, interesting. I thought I could try to bring in some of the manga tentacle/spiral stuff around the octopus. That will be challenging for sure!

Here’s a five-minute sketch of my first thought idea:

When I first read it thought: Inside a cave, my main object is a sunken treasure, it is covered by an octopus, sense of immobility, peace, and wonder is from the depth and mood of the cave.

As I re-read the challenge description, I got to wondering if this fits. I was going for the scene being underwater to capture the “Buried” and “Stuck” of the main challenge. Now I’m thinking… Is too much of everything considered “visible” here?

Thoughts? Does this concept work for the topic?

I think these two bullet points from the brief would need to be incorporated into the scene:

oooo that’s a nice idea actually :eyes:
having bits of gold things that are sticking out from within the sea floor like coins, bars, cups, or statuettes has a real pirate-adventure-y feel to it

maybe it’d feel like it fit more if you really emphasize the sunken-ness of the treasure though:

like if the treasure chest was turned upside down and got emptied while it was sinking and its contents spilled out into the sand-- additionally an empty chest would likely be attractive real estate for an octopus, sorta like how they’d tuck themselves inbetween rocks and such : )

edit: Oh and maybe a shipwreck too! just a silhouette to sort of explain how the treasure got there

Would getting trapped in a tornado count as “swallowed” for this challenge?

It can do this for sure.

Thanks, Dott! Cool ideas! I’ve tried to incorporate them and moved some things around. I think I have the shapes blocked in place and the basic colors seem ok so I wanted to post an update. And now it’s on to the details! :fish:

I don’t know if something being traped in spider web is a form of SWALLOWED.
This is my idea, I will refine it more if I can.

And there is spiral in it.

I think trapped in a spider web is an excellent idea!

Ok. I couldn’t come up with a dang thing, so just started scribbling off the top of my head. It’s morphing into a cat and mouse game

A pirate boat burried in the mist… Maybe I’ll make it a haunted pirate boat, stuck in the bermuda triangle! :ghost:

@Katamaheen that’s an amazing idea!
I feel like I hear a song behind that mist…? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr89k3WwAZA :scream: :ghost:

Being stuck in the Bermuda spiral would be more appropriate for this challenge.

Meh… I’m not sure giving up on the original composition idea just for the sake of the optional challenge would be a good idea… :face_with_spiral_eyes:

The mist could have spiral wisps at the edges. That’s a well known weather condition there, in the Bermuda Spiral area.

That’s not a bad idea, I’ll definitely try it! For now, I’m working on the draft of a second piece, with a Halloween feel and lots of spirals in it

Here’s my idea for this challenge… I came back to film poster parody, except this time I totally invented the film!

As you can see, I’m kind of trying to play a mind game with the theme about the visibility of the main subject, as it is Thing from The Addams Family, acting as if it was a proper and full corpse poking out of the grave when in reality we see almost entirely its body! Does it still count?
I tried to give the hand some loose spiral shape without it feeling too much of an unnatural postition.
Also, I’m afraid I know very little about The Addams Family to be honest, so any advice from more expert people would be appreciated. In particular, I’d like to know if any member of the family expressed the wish to start a career in the film industry, as a producer and/or director (could be 2 different people or the same), or personality-wise, who would it most likely be? For now I put Gomez as producer and director because it’s the first thing that came to my mind but this could change if you tell me some of those positions would be more in the personality of another character. :slightly_smiling_face:
For a moment I also thought about adding a lot of parodic names with puns related to the hand, but maybe it would be too much? For instance, as additional actors, there would be Handy Perkins, Christofinger Lee… And written by H. Andersen! :joy: But again, it would probably be too much. What do you think?

From what I know about the movies (the 90’ ones), I think Wednesday could be the director, and Pugsley one of the lead actors, playing a major scene as a victim of “the thing poking out of the grave”. The movie would end with a terrible murder (no special effects, of course). The parents would watch their children, and boast about how cute they are
