Oh, you got your own at-home zoo, huh?
It is true that snow is cool, especially when it’s fresh. Hearing and feeling the snow crunching under your feet is a great sensation… until it starts to melt in a brown-grey muddy water. If you don’t wear the right shoes, you’ll have wet socks in seconds! And I’m not talking about the black ice that turns every sidewalk and road into a huge ice rink!

Those are all things that are unimaginable to me that just eating slightly hard ice cream can make my teeth ache, I don’t know what it’s like in a place surrounded by ice, now I don’t want to imagine it. ![]()
It’s funny to see when it’s not you! People falling to the ground like penguins on ice.
Yeah it is, but here in Germany that has become a very rare experience unless you live high up in the Alps…and people in e.g. Cologne area are so estranged of snow that you could think they all spontaneously forget how to drive a car…full panic mode, “OMG three snowflakes on the road, I’m afraid to go faster than walking pace!”…okay most of them don’t even have snow tires anymore probably ![]()
Same here, every year! Well, especially in big cities. I grew up in a small village surrounded by forest, at 350m altitude. It might not be very high, but enough to snow when it rained at the next city.
Every year, we hear the big city people (especially Paris) crying about the snow (not even 3cm) and Canadians making fun of us. A tradition by now. ![]()
@Iruhas I can relate to all the bugs and wildlife! I’m in Florida, USA and there are always lizards and tree frogs all over the outside of the house, occasionally inside. All manner of insects outside all year around and huge spiders, which I’m terrified of LOL. But like you say… it’s not that bad after you get over the initial shock ![]()
Imagine people knowing how to drive a car correctly even in normal weather
‘Urban’ basically means ‘relating to a town or city’, but then you have to define- what is a town? Can you have a ‘rural town’ of 10 people? It wouldn’t be ‘urban’ in comparison with a big city, but it’s still a settled area. So maybe it’s just relative.
Oh, and I left this draft post here last night… I guess I should post it.
Bit of progress on this. Cleaned up the straight lines on the underside of the bridge a bit, and the holes on the side (not really sure what to call those). And added some detail to the grass/dirt and trees. It feels like a decent amount of progress, but also that there’s a lot left to go.
For an idea of what I’ll be talking about here please see my entry at Monthly Art Challenge – February 2024 – Architectural / Urban Scene - #18 by Iruhas
For the first entry I randomly selected from the exemplary website, but I didn’t activate the search filter because it didn’t work (maybe it clashed with some browser extensions I installed)
The 3 buttons on the right side I couldn’t press, I could only press the home and gallery buttons/icons. I am very unfamiliar with the scene of the first entry and I am confused to name it, so I am very doubtful if this first image is included in the challenge criteria or not.
And the drawing of entry number 2 I believe is still administratively included in the city area, it may look very wild but this is a common scene that you can find in empty areas in the city where I live.
When I was confronted with a definition of city that was beyond my knowledge and experience, confusion and doubt arose in my mind.
- First entry
- Second entry
- Both
- None, All are safe and allowed to participate
After this is done, I will enter the next entry which I plan to drawing from the screenshot reference from this google map.
And this is still from the city where I live.
As examples, here are some image search results for “urban scene”:
urban scene at DuckDuckGo
I thought it was worth highlighting Elixiah’s actual brief since there’s questions over what ‘urban’ means. Note it doesn’t explicitly say it must be ‘urban’ - it says architectural / urban, and the list of suggestions includes ‘rural barns’.
So I read that as having more scope than just town/city scenes, but I think a natural environment devoid of any man-made structures is outside of the brief.
Beautiful work ![]()
@Mythmaker You said it better than I could! ![]()
@sooz Has the rule about not posting entries in the finished art section while the contest is ongoing been removed? I couldn’t find it in the current contest rules. ![]()
Oh, you’re right, it’s not in there.
It has only happened a couple of times where people post challenge artwork before the challenge has been completed. That probably should be formalized in the rules.
I had been working on a drawing of downtown Lexington Ky. So i guess i will throw this WIP in and see where it goes. Now i have motivation to finish the project.
Just realized I posted this under the wrong thread. Sorry.
I just moved it for you, @Bobrowsdower.
Thanks
this is my favorite so far
