Well… the definition of “still life” is a painting of objects arranged in a composition by the artist. So maybe add some other objects and arrange them to your liking so it fits the definition of still life? Hope that helps. ![]()
thank you for explaining this, i was hoping someone explain it ![]()
i love this theme already, hopefully my hands can catch up with the imagination in my head

So kind of you to explain.
I ended up creating another drawing based on what you said. It was really fun to do ![]()
@sooz The rules state that submissions for the Monthly Challenge must be done from scratch in Krita. Am I allowed to cut and paste from other strictly Krita pieces I’ve done? I never feel it’s cheating if it’s repurposing your own work. I just finished the background and table surface of my piece and thought it’ d be nice to fill it with some past memories. ![]()
@KRITAKOUGAR I don’t think that’s a problem but let’s ping @raghukamath and @AhabGreybeard to see if they agree.
That’s fine, but I’ve already embarked on a full original.
My Muse overtook me and I just went with her! ![]()
It’s so strange because I was actually thinking of doing the same thing for this challenge. Since my brain is so empty for this theme, I was thinking of cutting up old artwork, creating a comp of the cut pieces, and then using that comp as my starting point… lol, great minds think a like.
On a sidenote… ran into a bobcat this morning. OMG they are huge… it scared the c**p out of me. Not as big as a cougar obviously… but scary nonetheless.
@sooz @raghukamath Are the 3D block ins/renders I use for my entries for these challenges still ok? We discussed this before in an earlier challenge. I think it was the challenge “glow” a year or two ago. @raghukamath mentioned that so long as 90% of the work I do is in Krita, he doesn’t see anything wrong with my 3D block ins. Is this still the case?
If it is… then @KRITAKOUGAR should be fine with what she wants to do.
@sooz, Since I’ve been asked for my opinion:
If you repurpose/resuse your own work done in krita then it’s not in breach of the rule that requires the work to be done in krita.
It would be in breach of any rule that requires work to be done from scratch.
What I’m doing here is reading the rules and trying to understand what they mean.
If it is generally felt that the rules can be changed to accommodate a situation or new ideas then it has been stated, in the rules themselves, that the rules can be changed, based on the feedback.
The only objection to a rule change done part way through would be from other entrants who felt that they had been disadvantaged by any rule change.
The rules say that you must do the work from scratch.
The rules say that the rules can be changed.
I think it is okay as long as the older work you are doing is also done in Krita from scratch. The rule says it needs to be done in krita from scratch it doesn’t say when. Although some time back we had this discussion about submitting older artwork done in krita. Some said it is not fair since other people need to do in the required time frame while the submitter may have done in leisure. But in your case I think it is okay since are you only using part of the artwork. Probably like using textures pre made in krita.
You could have been a lawyer ![]()
“He” has already decided to do the challenge from scratch.
But, I am actually glad I brought up this obviously somewhat controversial issue. I’ve never been a fan of any use of unfair advantages, and it did occur to me that an artist just joining the community/challenge wouldn’t have the advantage of a few year’s worth of past material to select from. So, that’s why I changed my mind about placing an old piece as a photo on a table. I like what I’ve come up with, and I am in agreeance with the challenge being strictly from scratch, so as nobody would have any “time-saving” advantages. Thank you, everyone, for your input and opinion on this subject.

I feel I should say that I have reused assets from past pieces in some instances. Generally I use them in a similar way to how a concept artist might use photographic textures to help build detail quickly.
To clarify; I don’t mean like making a collage - it’s more like taking pieces and distorting them to fit, maybe erasing parts and setting an appropriate layer style and/or opacity so that it blends. Then there is usually extensive painting over the top. The end result is far removed from the source such that you wouldn’t likely know if I didn’t say I’d done it.
It can take tens of hours for me to do a refined piece, and I don’t use CG or photos to help my process. So this is one way I’m trying to help improve efficiency without stepping outside of the boundaries I’m comfortable with for my own art. Using my own paintings as a source feels like a fair compromise.
I’m aware I’m the one who pushed against allowing previously completed works as entries for the contest, so I hope this doesn’t seem too hypocritical. ![]()
Here’s a good example - I used the rock painting as part of my underpainting for the Kiki one. I also used pieces to help build the texture:
Bits of rock are still recognisable in the foreground if you look closely, and I think there’s some similarity in composition. I also borrowed some cloud textures from the refined version of the yin/yang picture I was working on. This still represents over 25 hours of work even using this technique. Then the still unfinished refined version was up to around 37 hours.
I also used rock textures from my solarpunk piece to help build the rockface in my icy isolation entry. I think that one was around 25 hours at time of posting too.
Guys, don’t forget that “another world” is not limited to sci-fi, as all of the entries so far seem to go the alien way. A classic fantasy world also falls under the definition of another world, so you could go with a mostly earthly composition but with a few elements that are clearly themed, like a magic device, a dwarven or elven piece of jewelry etc. (seems like it’s where @Elixiah is going?)
As for me, I think I’ll paint a few dwarven treasures…
Another idea I had, although I’m not sure how efficient it would be, is to check the SCP wiki for ideas. For those who don’t know it yet, the SCP Foundation is a fan-made site gathering hundreds of creepypastas and urban legends as if part of a government control protocol (“Secure, Contain, Protect”). There are of course creatures but also a good part of those are actually objects that could sparkle your imagination for this challenge, although the navigation on the website can be a bit tedious.
I don’t think I have ever reused any part of one of my older personal works in a new piece. ![]()
I think it’s Ok, as long as it’s your own, especially if you are commissioned and working on a deadline. When I’m backlogged with pet portraits before Christmas, I commonly reuse saved backgrounds, textures and other time-saving cut and pastes. But, for my own personal work, I just don’t get as much pleasure or satisfaction from my creation if I use shortcuts. But that’s just me. ![]()
sorry @KRITAKOUGAR I thought you were a she. My apologies
No worries.
The “Cougar” isn’t in reference to an older woman who prefers younger men. It’s been my favorite car, and spirit animal of sorts, and Kougar Kreationz has been my official moniker for over a year. ![]()
It’s very rare that I burst into loud laughter so thank you both ![]()
