Monthly Art Challenge WIPs and Discussion Thread – June 2024

thanks @Elixiah blender has a lot of buttons and can get super intimidating quickly, but if you keep things simple in blender you can do a whole lot.

what I meant by my statement is that I can’t do the optional challenge of using just one brush because I would like to use a blend brush with my favorite airbrush. that’s two brushes I’m using… so the one brush challenge is a NO-GO without my blend brush

But you know it is a challenge. You can use it to learn something new  I mean you could draw 1 image with your favorite brushes and another with just 1 brush. It almost feels like you’re not confident in your skill and overly reliant on that blendbrush, when you say it is a no go… be open and enjoy the process.

I can get a pretty good blend with a textured brush that has good pressure sensitivity.

that’s my favorite blend brush… followed closely by the gaussian blur brush

i spent nearly a decade without any blending brush on photoshop cs3. I don’t need to prove that I could live without it.

I’m not sure if I’m going to finish this or not.

I have some ideas but I can’t even decide if I wanna go for something funny or something epic… :face_exhaling: And to say I entered the challenges in the first place to cure my chronic indecisiveness!

Last month you started with a funny idea, and end with an epic elf. maybe this month will be same? :grimacing:

I was hoping you post the WIP of a funny vampire with a mirror, but you did not, it’s stuck in my mind :grimacing:

Sorry, I didn’t keep it! I guess I’m a bit too quick at deleting what I’m not satisfied with… Besides, it was based on a photo and I didn’t want to bother linking the reference and all if I was to abandon the idea!

Why won’t you finish it?

Maybe do thumbnails first? Then pick the thumbnail you like best… or if you can’t decide which thumbnail you like, put up a poll letting us decide

Thumbnails can help for the composition but I’m stuck at the step before that: before composing you need to settle your topic, or it would make too many thumbnails, several possibilities for several ideas… I guess I need a bit more time to think about it. Inspiration is a fickle beast!

PS: I watched the new film Damsel to get into “dragon mood”. It didn’t really help, not the sort of dragon I want to make, bt nice story!

I don’t trust my drawing skills, especially coloring and color picking
And I do not know how to calibrate the monitor and the tablet so that they have the same color rendering. And more importantly, those who are watching should see the same colors.

I think the sketch alone proves that your drawing skills are more than adequate! :+1:
About the colors, it doesn’t matter: the important isn’t really the colors by themselves but the connection they have together, and that won’t change with a different monitor calibration. This can still be corrected by a filter afterwards if really needed. And if you’re really not comfortable with it, you can still make a black&white illustration. So you have no excuse! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

i struggled with colors forever. the one thing that helped me was creating palettes. and when I create palettes, I really limit it. I do 8-10 color palettes that I got from color palette cinema on Instagram and use that as a starting point.

corentin is right though… colors (hues) don’t matter as much anywhere near as value (lightness). you can color that dragon any color you want, but it won’t look right if you don’t have your values done correctly… so you can always just concentrate on your blacks and whites

Have a brainstorming session with a mind map. I haven’t done that in a while, but when I’m absolutely stuck with the drawing/sketching, I resort to writing to clear my thoughts out.

Image two for this month: Dragon’s Head
Sticking with an Asian-feeling dragon for this one… I’m so impressed with everyone who can create a Western mythology-style dragon!

Done with the stock RGBA wet 07 Bristles brush. This feels more like painting/coloring than the things I normally do in Krita. This brush uses the color smudge engine, so there is a ton of flexibility in the color variation, stroke marks, texture, and smudge ability using only the one brush. I still have a long way to go here, but I feel like it’s an interesting start.

Colors can be tough. Sometimes I find it useful to use reference images that I find impressive and grab the colors from there. And the nice thing about dragons is no one is going to say, “Dragons aren’t that color!” I hope you finish this one, it is a really cool start!
