Monthly Art Challenge – June 2025 – Wrath of the Sun

For those not in the know, The Sun is a tabloid style “newspaper” that often has outrageous headlines and unbelievable stories on their front page. Don’t worry, I’m not submitting this… it was the first laugh that came to mind when I saw this month’s topic. The original headline on this date in 2010 was “Godzilla Kills Bono”… per a RedIt post! :person_shrugging:

I’ll do something with a bit more polish and theme adherence later this month.

LOL I didn’t expect the interpretation of the theme to go so wild so quick! Amazing! :joy:

Fabulous interpretation, @steve.improvthis.

Juste some ideas, not sure where I want to go. The theme make me want to work on some charadesign and at the same time I directly think about some illustrations.

I have no idea where I want to go with this month’s challenge LOL

I used the idea of the sun part of the theme to make this. I started drawing Alectrone, the Greek goddess of the sun and sunrise.

Thought to upload this before my computer dies. Still have a lot more work to go!

I, too, thought of going with the Greek/Roman god idea, and I went in a very different direction ('cause I could never do a portrait of Venus justice in a painting!).
Rather, I chose to portray Venus as she transits to show off the Wrath of the Sun. It’s a once in a generation view from Earth.

Optional Challenge: There are 3 different fancy borders here, the sun’s plasma, the thin atmosphere on Venus, and the black bars to keep everything contained.

This is my submission for the monthly challenge. I’ve illustrated a harsh desert under a blazing red sun.

I’m planning to add people crossing the desert to show the impact of the heat. I might also include a decorative element as part of the design.

Ya beat me to it @YunanimousArts ! Very wrathful sun indeed! I can feel the pain from here!
I might still work on a Sahara landscape, we’ll see.

@TheInkedKnight - Love this!

Reminds me of my D&D games… “I didn’t ask how big the room is… I CAST FIREBALL!”

I’m putting my landscape on ice for a bit, and I think I’ll focus on this still life for a while. No idea if this will be in oils or watercolors or something else yet… we’ll see!

6-7 Wrath of the Sun - Grapes to Raisins

6-10 Grape color blocking inserted using the rdi) Circlebrush. Still lots of blending and lighting details to go…

6-14 Table added… mostly Airbrush, Circlebrush, and rdi) Peaks and Valleys

6-17 Added a shop background and a jar of raisins, lost the scoop. I felt like a jar would fit in the scene better. Those sun wrinkled grapes are going to need some love! I think the ones in the jar just need some lighting… the ones on the table, well, that’s going to take some doing so they don’t look like painted rocks!

6-18 Played around with a bunch of border ideas and landedon a simple black frame with some lighting highlights from the rbr) Elveleie brush. Also added in the raisins on the table and gave all of them some frosting/lighting using the Circlebrush with highlights from rst) Grass. Getting close to done!

I will not go with this idea but I needed to at less do a funny symbolic interpretation

My first time attempting a competition and it’s a bit of a struggle. This unfinished image is based upon the Flight of Icarus, but I’m unlikely to complete it.

Why unlikely to complete it, @DavidHudson? It seems already almost done and it’s great, you should really persevere! :+1:
And welcome to the Challenges!

Love this, @DavidHudson.

Thanks. I’ve got to that middle stage where I’m struggling to make it work, but I might try and finish it soon :+1:
