Monthly Art Challenge WIPs and Discussion Thread – March 2024

Thanks chief.

Gold is a metal according to the table of elements… so shouldn’t gold be counted as fulfilling the requirements of the prompt? @Mythmaker what say ye sir?

Your correct. I misread and thought you wrote down plastic. I apologize.

Gold can be made to have different colours:

We can say its a Gold Aluminium Alloy (AuAl2) or purple gold.

I say: The brief asks for metal. Gold is a metal. What’s the confusion?! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

If it was my piece I might want to weather the painted parts to allow for more interesting texture/material details e.g. scratches, chipped/flaked parts, areas of oxidation.

But it’s not mine - so you have to follow your own creative vision!

I’ll probably end up doing something like that myself anyway, since all my ideation thus far has been droid related!

As far as I can tell this is going to be the hardest one to choose from yet!

@Elixiah I have a question. Why is it when I do a close up on my work I can really see how the sausage is made. But when I do a close up on your work it’s absolutely flawless? Just wondering?

@Bobrowsdower Sausage? That rhinestone teddy is pretty dang flawless! I always see tons of flaws on my stuff. Show me an example of what yer talkin about!

This is a remake of a plein air airbrush painting on canvas I did for an on-site demo at Daytona Bike Week in 2012. I had started a digital remake of it in Krita some time ago, and thought now’s a good time to finish it

This is my work in progress for the March Challenge. Always wanna improve my armor drawing so I think this challenge gonna be good for that (and a good excuse to draw Space Marine). Right now I am testing the light and color while adjusting the proportion. Hopefully I can finish this on time.

WIP for hopefully this month challenge, drawing metal stuff (armor for me).

Funnily I tried to take some screenshots in Destiny 2 (Video game) for ref, where I notice some slow render bug. But it gave me idea for a test.

This is the test.

Basically the rendering in a game is through multiple pass, and I tried to mimic the same process so that I don’t need to guess which place need more work or the depth is still lacking. Around 2 hours to get the value ratio close to the ref photo, and I add another hour to change some stuff so the illustration feels a bit different from the ref.

@ynr_nohara I moved your post out of your sketchbook thread because it’s a WIP for this month’s challenge. Once the challenge has been completed, you are welcome to post the artwork in the main area of the forum.

Ah I didn’t know there’s a rule for the WIP. I’ll keep that in mind next time.

Quick question. As long as metal is the centerpiece of a project does it matter how much. I’m working on something and I would say the ratio is about 35% metal 65% nonmetallic. The focus is clearly the metal portion though. Don’t mean to get into semantics I just want to play fair.:+1:

I’d say go for it. Nothing in the rules gives a ratio of metal to present!
