If its shiny and stylized you’re going for like polished chrome. then youre just painting distrorted and mirrorred, landscapes on each reflective surface. The classic is the sky-horizon-earth scheme. The more poiished the surface, the sharper the edges and the higher the contrast.
Tip: the illusion diminishes up close so zoom out to check the effect.
I think I’ll start on this one. I’ve been wanting to paint this rusty old car for a while, so maybe now is the right time. I’ll see if I can get some chrome look going.

No - I don’t do any that because I’m too impatient! ![]()
I usually end up regretting it though… ![]()
No, because I ‘blob it out’ to start with rather than sketch lines.
Well, to each their own method I guess.
Here’s what I’m working on and how. As much as I love drawing knights myself, I figured there would be already enough weapons and armors in the entries so I went for a big cauldron instead. More peaceful option - although we don’t know the intentions of that witch! Hahaha! ![]()
Here’s the original sketch.
Here’s the same with the flat colors.
And finally to show you the flat colors alone. Now I can go crazy with the textues, lights and shadows on each layer without the risk of wasting the other parts. ![]()
Of course I went to check on some pictures of cauldrons and cats and whatnot on the internet but only to get a general idea, I didn’t reproduce any of them, so no reference image to show…
My process. Sketch, fill, clean, blend, detail, clean, blend, detail, clean, blend, detail, etc etc etc.![]()

.
Suggestion.
If you have a shiny spoon, just take a picture of the reflections on it… or just take it with you.
Of course this would mean you will be revealing the secret of the fourth wall.
You mean you’d like to see a horribly deformed convex reflection of my face on that cauldron?
Nah, that’s the place for the cat…
Starting on some rusty chrome. The Memileo brushes were great for the background, but not so much for rendering the metal and rust. So switched back to my usual grunge brushes and airbrush for that.
Uff! I had a feeling I was playing into your hands when I set the brief - I even imagined you might do something like this remembering the earlier ones you painted! ![]()
Sigh… I’d better come up with something extra juicy this month! ![]()
Oh come on @Mythmaker !
I’m expecting something UNexpected from you! I know you can knock it out of the park if you want to ![]()
So many things to draw, I haven’t started this yet. It will be a god chance to see if I have improved since this entry for the December '23 KA logo challenge…
That’s a really nice and clean sketch… also, I wouldn’t obsessed about being perfect in the beginning. The beginning is supposed to be the messy part ![]()
bob, your rhinestones are making me want to quit this challenge lol. that is well painted
Thanks for the compliment! Please don’t quit on my account!
Are animations allowed for this contest?
@Studio-Kyubo There’s nothing in the rules that specifies the format, but being new to the challenge, there are several other rules you will want to be aware of. You can read them here.
The moment I laid down my clean line sketch, I know I’m in trouble. I knew based on my sketch that I was going to have a painted robot… and painted metal has properties of plastic, not actual metal. I’m now depending on the rococo embellishments to fulfill the requirements of the prompt. Hopefully I can make it look gold…
Anyways… slowly working out the details and getting rid of my line sketch;
Nice design. I love robots. If it was me I would just say the nuts, bolts, gears, servos, etc are made of metal. This is going to turn out awesome!
