Monthly Art Challenge – March 2024 – Marvellous Metal

Hello Krita Artists !

We completed the Monthly Art Challenge for February 2024. Congratulations to @Mythmaker, the winner. And congratulations to everyone who participated by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who voted for the entries.

And now It’s time to announce the Monthly Art Challenge for March 2024.

Monthly Art Challenge – March 2024 – Topic: Marvellous Metal :crossed_swords:

Further details from @Mythmaker:

Your task for this month is to paint a picture, real or imaginary, that celebrates metal as its central theme.

This one is wide open for interpretation. Here’s just a few keywords to help get you started: Armour, weapons, jewellery, tools, tableware, structures, vehicles, vessels, robots, chromed, brushed, rust, oxidation, flaked, ore.

  • All styles are acceptable, but keep in mind the material properties of what you’re painting - using texture and light to convincing effect.

  • If you’re painting from imagination remember - references are your friend!

  • I suggest avoiding things that are entirely coated with paint - We want to see that lovely metal! Something old with flaked paint and rusty parts could look cool though.

Okay, that’s enough words - Let’s have some fun!

Happy painting! :paintbrush:

Please post only artworks and discussion related to submitted artwork in this thread. There is a WIP thread for each monthly art challenge in which you can ask questions and post your works in progress.

Rules

(Note new rule in 5th bullet point, in bold)

  • The composition should be your own and not an exact copy from someone or somewhere else. If you are using a reference photo taken by anyone other than yourself, please ensure the license allows for its use and include a credit to the photographer with your submission.
  • Artwork should be done in Krita. Submissions must be done from scratch in Krita, no paint-over or tracing allowed. Photobashing is allowed only when explicitly specified in the topic.
  • The topic changes every month. Your submission should be somehow related to the topic. If possible, please add a few lines explaining your idea and image.
  • No AI-generated images are allowed, not even partial use of AI and paint over. It is unfair for those who are drawing from scratch.
  • You can post a maximum of 3 entries and also edit the entries until the deadline. All your entries will be clubbed during the vote and you only get one vote. Reply with your entries to this post in this thread. All entries must appear in a single post. Please do not post your submissions in any other category on Krita-Artists until voting has closed and the winner is declared.
  • In order to have the image featured, the entries need to be safe for work so please avoid any NSFW or controversial content. The moderators can use their discretion to disqualify the image from the contest with prior notice. Of course, the artist will be given the chance to submit an alternate image or change it.
  • Submissions will be accepted until 2024-03-27T17:00:00Z, at which time the topic will automatically close. You can check how much time is left at the bottom of the thread.

We will hold a poll at the end of the challenge period. The artwork with the most votes will be the winner.

Prize

  • The winner(s) will be featured on this website in the featured artwork row.
  • The winner(s) will have the privilege to set the topic of their liking. If the winner is not available or reachable, then the 1st runner up will be asked to provide the topic and challenge
  • The winner will also be awarded the Monthly Art Contest Winner badge.

Please spread the word about this art challenge by posting your artwork on various social media websites with the hashtag – #KritaChallenge. If possible, include a link to the forum post.

I hope we will enjoy this exercise so let us begin.

**P.S. Note we can change the rules based on the feedback on this contest and modify the format. Any suggestions are welcome. To submit feedback, please create a new topic in the Site Feedback category.

Note : We have changed the title of this event from Monthly Art Contest to Monthly Art Challenge as it is more of a challenge for learning together rather than a contest, even if there is an award.

I drew Excalibur in stone. The crown is to signify the fact that whoever pulls it out will become king. My brother came up with the idea of putting the sword in stone and calling it Excalibur. I, however, did all the drawing.

After practicing a bit more, I have decided to make another submission. Here it is.

I had just finished a piece using very colorful variations of this mech butterfly when I saw what the challenge was for March, so…I did some recycling and made my Metal Moth! :metal: :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Painting metal is quite a challenge! After a few tries, I finally managed to make something close to it. The problem was that it was a bit too realistic for my cartoony drawing, so I had to find a way to reduce the effect without erasing it too much. I hope I did well

Second try for the challenge! Thank you @Corentin and @LLEPPSTER for the good critiques, you were both right! It does look better that way!

The bronze parts are perfect! :+1: The steel parts may be a bit too blue? A severe judge could say they look more like crystal than metal… Or maybe they are just magic! On the other hand, with your cartoony style the blue makes the illustration more lively than a more realistic steel-like color would…

Yep! Grey was a bit too bland to look at. Making it blue was the right decision! Now that I think about it, teal could have also worked. Maybe for a different kind of metal?

I think the crystal feeling on the sword comes mainly from the fact that the lines are clear. And I would make the blue of the helmet a bit less saturated… But it’s up to you. Great job anyway.

Thank you for the advice! I’m definitely gonna do that next time :+1:

My homage to Jack Kirby. This could be one of the kill derby goons in Captain America #196. Learned a lot from copying his way of drawing faces, hands and of course shiny metal.

Ancient bat is trapped on sap from an ancient tree That forms a blue amber over time. The stone is found and craftsmen set in their idol of an ancient spirit made of electrum metal. Lost and now found. Part of my world building.

You can’t think of metal without thinking of a sword. I had another BLUE STEEL in mind but i’m not sure anyone will get the reference.

is this good enough or can I improve it?

Its just a shield being melted in hot boiling lava and smoke coming out.
I couldnt like add more detail

@Cannonic
You can enter this artwork as long as you drew the shield yourself and did not do any tracing from an image.

I call this “Freedom” I had some difficulties piecing this together but I think it turned out pretty well. I wanted this to represent my freedom from chaining myself into one art style and exploring different things. My art medium of choice was always pen/pencil and paper and a few years ago I decided to break out into other mediums such as painting and digital art. I love art all around.
