Monthly Art Contest - October 2022 - Topic - Environmentally Adapted Dragon - Contest closed

Hello Krita artists :art:.

We completed the monthly art contest for September. The winner for September contest is @Mythmaker Congratulations to everyone who participated. And now we are having monthly contest for the month of October. @Mythmaker has chosen the topic for this month.

Monthly Art Contest - October 2022 - Topic - Environmentally Adapted Dragon.

  • Theme: Fantasy / Creature Design

  • Brief: Design and draw/paint a dragon which is physiologically adapted to the environment in which it lives.

  • All styles are welcome (within the general rules).

Suggestion: Look at real-world creatures to help inspire your design. See if you can find interesting features that might work well with a dragon and give it an advantage in the environment it lives.

Think; evolution and natural selection rather than just ‘it’s a magical creature so anything goes’.

Examples:

  • If it lives in a cold environment, how does it keep warm (or cool in a hot environment)?

  • Does it need camouflage to hide from predators or help it approach prey?

  • How does it move effectively?

  • Does it have specialised scales (if it has scales!) to help protect it?

  • Does it have aesthetic features to help attract a mate?

It was looooong to draw, using the Cheap Ballpoint pen Brush it need thousands and thousand of strokes I think.
Just hell.

But I like to result

Here is my Firefly Dragon!

( I think I need to explain why my dragon is in armor )
These dragons are the sentinels of the fairy forest. They protect the fireflies ( with which they share some DNA) from predators and also guard the perimeter of the forest.

( please excuse the previous edits, I fixed some mistakes!)

These dragons have adapted to living in the city dump, partly removing the need for waste incineration
It’s obviously not very good for their health, but still they have thrived for several generations

Hello

This is my dragomole.
Most of my inspiration came from moles and cave lizards.

Some details

Wing devolve in time into small winglets to better feel the environment.
They are blind since in the dark they do not need their eyes.
Their favorite food are the blue mushrooms making them glow, although they also eat small bugs, other flora a and can also eat small dead animals.
Antennas are used for analyzing how big is space they are in, also they help with locating danger.
Dragomoles have sharp paws for digging and quite good sense of smell.

Here’s mine, a turtle-dragon breed:

This dragon is very peaceful, it doesn’t attack by default (but does if solicited), it goes around woods eating food (like mushrooms, fishes and some plants), the spikes on the shell help him to defend himself against bears and other forest animals (in fact, it is a slow animal, years of evolution have developed him those spikes for defense), this animal is an amphibious, it can walk and stay underwaters for hours, days at maximum. The male’s “massiveness” is a powerful factor for attracting a mate, it signifies that it can hunt without problems, The female instead, makes some courting noises to the male when in love.
The shell is without doubt, his house and he gets inside whenever it gets cold, it can camouflage pretty well in bushes and trees, but he camouflages very rarely, because he is quasi-herbivorous and can defend himself, and yes, he moves pretty slow and sometimes gets stuck underwater.

Here is my entry. ( I know it’s garbage ha ha ) I was super rushed, and I’m super beginner. But this is the Baby Porch Pumpkin Dragon!
This strange little dragon only appears during the month of october when people begin growing and displaying pumpkins. It will eat into pumpkins and then fall into a deep sleep until it awakes to ravage another pumpkin patch. Sometimes it will oddly place itself on a porch and has been seen to be a fierce protector of candy, discouraging those who would take more candy than is their fair share.

Introducing this is a Chirhibee Dragon, I was inspired by 3 creatures (rhinoceros, chickens, & bees) as shown
is in the sketch below:

This creature’s house is flat and dangerous because he lives underground in the quicksand.

Its physical characteristics are insect-like wings (can be folded into a small size when in the ground), its body length reaches more than 3 meters, the upper outer skin is very hard, and the bottom is very soft because it is full of fur to regulate the temperature, it has 6 eyes, its mouth is full of sharp teeth pointing out, its long legs very useful for jumping from the ground so that no one survives before the prey can escape from quicksand. He is very clever dig and hide. His favorite food is anything that gets stuck in quicksand. This creature comes out and flies to hunt and find dry places.

The mysterious dragon inhabits the Mariana Trench.
No light, extreme pressure, scarce food, everything is very heavy.
Only evolved sea creatures can survive there.
inspired by a sea snake in the deep sea, and drew it in the form of a transparent dragon.
