Thank you !
I think the other important part in the new process other than the time spent, is making the focus smaller by splitting into parts so it’s not too overwhelming. Like focus on sketch only then clean lines, then greyscale shading, etc. The old process was really stressful when drawing with limited ref especially when it came to detailing so I stopped early. I think slow is fine, stuck and getting frustrated is not .
practice wip, similar mid process with miss Fortune’s.
I only have 250 followers of IG and people try to scam me 3 times there, and 1 times on Twitter. Is there a good way to do commission work? People told me to try Fiverr, but the more I read it the less I want to try. Basically it has its own type of scammer too (refund scam and dodging payment). Idk what to do.
There are many ways and many different tips saying this or that is the right way. Some may fit for you others not, you have to decide which way you want to go, but I really like the following statement from a topic about commissions:
Be bold, they want you to work for them, to do a piece you often can not offer to other customers because for them a portrait of person or pet XY is worthless. They ask you, because they think you are the one who can do it for them, they selected you because of that. So what to do? I would ask for the full refund beforehand! If they believe in you and your capabilities and don’t want to cheat they’ll pay you beforehand, if not they are probably “problematic” customers.
If you can consistently promote yourself in social media or forums, I believe so, but don’t quote me on that since I am bad at it. Pricing depends on demand and your rep. To be honest I have to do admin job for family business to get afloat, but most of my tools, books, and other resources I bought from commission pay. I think the best advice I can give is to not fully committed until you found your audience.
For the question is it make sense to put the time investment? It depends really, because even if I can’t make money out of my drawing skill, I will keep drawing. I have health condition issue that requires me to always focus on something and not let my mind idle, and I chose drawing to help me with that. For other people it might not worth the time, so no clear answer.
Another one I drew with my friend Riley. All I did was adding texture and alter the light scheme a bit. This was draw on top study. I don’t really draw anthropomorphic animal, you should ask her if you want one. Her IG is Rileyfae_ .
Sometimes I think it’s best to do a focused study, like drawing just hands or feet, because I clearly lack the polish and speed when drawing those. Unfortunately the moment I felt that it is stressful I go back to draw female characters again .
This one rather lengthy, 4 days maybe around 6 hours total. You might be able to tell where I broke focus and started doing chicken scratch again. Ref is Fukashi_yukawa on IG.
You know when I play fps game I am really bad at the leading shots, reaction/twitch shooting, repositioning, and guessing enemy location IF all of them have to be done at the same time or in quick succession. I think same thing happen when I draw. Trying to guess figure shape/pose, shading value, color theme at the same time, resulting in something like the first picture. Taking my time and do 1 thing at a time improve the result greatly.
So I’ve been doing Guweiz study and the thing that is very hard for me to figure out is the light and color. I’ve been Guweiz’ patron for a few months in the past and he explains that it is important to differentiate between the local color of the object and the lights that hitting on the object (this includes the the different color that each light source carries). But even when I can see the process being shown while also explained to me, I still have hard time implementing it on my own paintings.
I am still wondering if there’s some kind of smaller scale practice that is best to do experiment for such process.
Too much in my mind, I should think more what I should type.
Anyway barely able to gather some money to order a new CPU… finally. From i5 9400F to i7 9700K. Yes not by much and still in the same generation. But that’s all I can afford at the moment. Hopefully it will arrive with no problem.
Some of my recent studies:
This elf Ranger is the important one, Several new techniques implemented here especially about conserving my computer resource. I split the parts not in normal layers but in different files, and then importing them to one file as file layers. When I update the file containing the parts, it also update the combined illustration file.
This one quick paint from a ref, adding missing parts of the characters. Like redrawing a headshot portrait and adding its entire body while maintaining the light scheme.
Actually found the file layer feature here by mistake. Really good for slower computer, the left one is around 1GB of work file size, big size brush (1k px ++) say on overlay layer will lag maybe around 1-2 seconds for my computer. The right one is only 400 MB, big brush is still smooth around that file size.
Bruh, I missed a lot of cool stuff! Really beautiful paintings, very nice!
I immediately recognized the high elf ranger because I was just catching up on Goblin Slayer! That is an amazing anime BTW. Sadly, season 1 is not available in streaming services here in Poland (apparently), so I went out of my way and ordered a DVD from the UK. Sorry, I guess I’m going a bit OT, but I was not prepared for DVD quality in 2023 I should have checked Wikipedia before, but that stuff is 480p. 480p! Can you believe it? I sit slack-jawed when the window opened on my 4K monitor
Anyway, Goblin Slayer sure is brutal and dark, but the ladies are adorable Maybe it’s a secret harem anime after all?
