painterly brushes

hello.
so I did a test painting yesterday to get a feel of the brushes and I must say, I’m impressed by the performance and the options. the brushes feel very natural to me.
I’ve been using mainly a modified ‘wet_bristles_rough’ and 'bristles-2_flat_rough (both with several custom brush tips, but same settings as default)

what I’m looking for now are some more tips and tricks for painterly / realistic brush settings, especially stuff I might not be familiar with from Photoshop

Oh wow, great portrait with some abstract colors! I hope it gets featured on the main page soon

For some tips on painterly effects: I guess you can really like our newly introduced impasto effect, which allows to embed darker and lighter areas in a brushtip or use a texture as a map of lightness.
None of these have presets in default pack, so you may want to check out my brushpack or this short video on how to create this type of brushes:

For the other thing, you can pick a pattern and in its settings, set mode to “Lightness map”. I hope you’ll get some neat ideas on how to use those features in your workflow

Ramon Miranda’s Digital Atelier video tutorials cover that in detail, but those cost money (https://krita.org/en/shop/) – though the money is used to support Krita development.

This video probably is also interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMQzJ5n6LPE

Your portrait has a apterus’s (peter polach) vibe into it

There is one more thing I forgot to mention.
Since krita 4.4.0, in brush editor (F5) there is a “Lightness strength” checkbox. If you check it, contrast of this impasto brush will not be constant - you can make it dependent on pressure or distance you draw. Current contrast becomes the max value then.

You can also experiment with randomizing hue between strokes, as I did in my pack. I heard people call this effect painterly too.

In progress?
Hmm, try and see, but I’d keep it like this if you ask me. Looks great, for the colors, pose, expression, detail.

Oh yeah maybe the hair could be nicer.
Since the overall painting works very well, nicer hairs would be only a nice addition. If you like

eh, maybe wip is not the best description. it’s to try brushes but not necessarily finish, give it a name and present as a thing

yeh, that option caught my eye. I love how all the thingies have a curve.
I often add HSB variety to my brushes, usually around 2-3% just enough to make strokes stand out but not enough to lose control

I was about to say the same thing, it’s Peter Pohlach using Krita!

I also saw that Piotr Jablonski is also a Krita user, both of their works are fantastic as is this image.

That is very surprising to hear.

I take it back… it’s not really that surprising since Krita is a very good software.
