System: Windows/Steam version 5.2.2
Hello everyone, I’m new to Krita but I’m having some interface issues. Whenever I go to move my pen outside of the canvas and towards one of the dockers or anywhere else on the screen, the pen pretty much stop functioning entirely. I have to use my mouse to navigate anywhere outside of the canvas, and the pop-up palette also won’t work for me either. The two buttons on my pen also don’t work either.
What’s strange is that when I first installed Krita, I didn’t have these issues, I remember being able to use my pen buttons and switch my brush by simply tapping the brush button on the docker with my pen. This all happened rather suddenly and I can’t seem to work out how to solve the issue. Here are some of the things I’ve tried to do but haven’t worked:
-Restarting my computer didn’t work.
-Updating my drivers for the tablet didn’t do anything either.
Any sort of tips or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Update:
I figured out something huge but still don’t have a solution.
So before this issue started, I was having trouble saving my work, because I would always get an error that said “File could not be opened” whenever I would try to save. In order to solve that, I changed the permission on the Krita.exe so it would always run as an Administrator. As an Admin, this is when the issue happens.
So right now, I’m at a crux, I can either:
-Run Krita as an Admin and save, but not be able to use my pen buttons.
-Run Krita without Admin permissions but be able to draw how I want.
I also upgraded to the beta so see if that would fix the issue, which led me to figuring out what it was.
Once again, if anyone can lend a hand or some advice, that would much appreciated.
Maybe it’s some weirdness related to Steam? Or some of Krita files became owned by the Administrator and now your user can’t open them?
If you try to save your file in a prohibited directory, like C:\, then you will get a clear error message and it will suggest that you save your file to Pictures instead. The one you’re getting is vague and something different.
Thank you very much for the reply, but it doesn’t seem like changing the renderer worked for me. I tried changing it from Direct3D via Angle to OpenGL, and my pen still can’t access any of the dockers.
Can you take a look in the Krita profile for your tablet to see if there’s a problem with the defined area? I mean, does it show the pen having access to only a portion of the screen?
Since I went from the Steam release to the beta and the problem persisted, I’m not sure if it’s because of Steam. In regards to the second theory, I’m using an administrator account (I’m the only user on my desktop), but I’m not sure if that can tell me anything.
At first I thought that it was a directory thing, as in I need to save it off of my OneDrive (which is where I usually save all my work), but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I’ve attached screenshots of errors that received when I tried saving in my OneDrive and when I tried saving outside of it.
They both result in the same vague error, and clicking on the “Show Details” button has the box below repeat the same error message: “Cannot open file for writing. Reason: The file could not be opened.”
Can you try saving on another drive (d:) or a USB stick?
Honestly, I’m not sure what the problem is. Even if you have a single local user account, it’s not the same as running in administrator mode. Unless your system is configured this way, it should not run with elevated privileges (as that’s dangerous).
When you first got your tablet, you installed the driver on your device. I don’t know your tablet at all but I found this page – there is an image of using the driver to set preferences.
I have same problem with you,but I can save my work.
Try using the official version instead of the steam version, and the pen will work outside of canvas.
For me, my Steam version of Krita works as if it were the version I normally use (I only have Krita on Steam to support users like you). And I also use a Huion tablet. So, with this issue, I have the issue not to know where I have to search for a solution of your problem
Hello everyone, I’m going to make this a post as a way to reply to all the new responses I’ve gotten in addition to providing an overview of everything that’s happened and everything I’ve done.
To briefly summarize to those who are new to the topic: I’m at a crossroads when it comes to using Krita. I can either:
A) Run Krita without admin and have it function normally, but I cannot save my work as .kra. B) Run Krita as an admin and be able to save my work. The tradeoff is that I cannot move my pen outside of the canvas area.
More information is provided in my first and second post in this thread.
Below is a list of troubleshooting methods I’ve done for A:
Generally, I cannot save as a kra file to anywhere I try. I tried both on and off OneDrive, I’ve tried using an external hardrive and a flashdrive too, but no matter where I try, I cannot save my work as kra.
I was initially using the steam version, but I downloaded the new beta from the website to see if anything would change, but the problem persisted. I then uninstalled both the steam version and the beta to get the current version on the Krita website, and still no dice.
Below is a list of stuff I’ve tried for B:
Updating the drivers for my tablet didn’t seem to do anything.
Changing the renderer didn’t seem to do anything either.
Switching the Tablet Input API is the closest “fix” that I currently have. If my API is on WinTab, then I can’t move my pen off the canvas, which is the initial issue. What’s weird based on my testing, this problem only exists within the dockers of Krita. If my mouse is on another monitor, I can summon it back to the canvas just fine, but if I place my mouse on a docker and try to touch the canvas with my pen, it doesn’t detect anything and the mouse remains inactive.
If I switch it to Windows 8+ Pointer Input, I can move it off the canvas, but my pen buttons do not work at all (which is technically fine, but I really do want to use my pen buttons since I used them a lot previously)
That just about sums everything up. If allowed, I would like to run Krita without admin and be able to save (as that would allow my both my pen buttons to function and let me move around the dockers), but with how vague the error message seems to be, it seems like it would be a difficult fix. More help/input is always welcome.
I’m not even sure what could lead to a situation like this… To me, there must be a fundamental configuration issue with your system and it’s probably unrelated to Krita at all. Maybe it’s a problem with your tablet driver, as it’s one of those less “prominent” brands, I think.
It’s really a shot in the dark, but could you try these “tests” to maybe narrow down where the problem is? You don’t need to try it all, just try some if you feel like it’s worth it.
Completely uninstall your tablet and unplug it from the PC. Reboot your PC. Run Krita without admin. Can you save now? → If still not, then I think your Krita or system in general is broken.
Create a new local user account without any admin rights. Log in to that account. Download the public Krita 5.2.2 portable zip. Unzip it and run. Can you now save anywhere?
The purpose of this is to see if anything would change and maybe then try some new steps, depending on the outcome.
Thanks for responding, sorry this took me so long to write up, I was away on vacation with some family.
Your second recommendation, creating a new local user account and installing Krita to run it, seems to have worked! In fact, I can now save and use both of my pen buttons normally as long as I use the new account. There is one new issue, but it’s just a slight inconvenience if anything: it seems as if I have to reinstall the drivers for my tablet every time I sign into the new account. Since it takes less than 10 seconds to install every time I run it, it isn’t too much of an issue for me, but I am confused as to why that is.
So based on that, I think its safe to assume that the issue was just some sort of problem with my admin account’s directory or something similar.
Hey, good to hear that it somewhat worked! Unfortunately, I don’t know much about Gaomon, and don’t have any advice there.
Based on your results, I suspect your primary account is always running in Administrator mode, and that’s likely interfering with some applications, such as Krita and your tablet. If you ever get around to reinstalling Windows, make sure to run your main account as a regular user. If you ever need admin rights, you can elevate them once by using right-click menu with “Run as Administrator”. That’s the safest approach.
