People often enough think that the auto-save function will save the work for them and then get disappointed when there is no file after they close the program and didn’t save the file on their own, and their hard work is gone. Honestly I can’t blame them, the name is a bit misleading when comparing what it actually does to other software. I think it would be better to change the name of the functionality to something like auto-recovery or anything along the line, to better convey that this is just for when things go wrong, not an actual save.
Since this is still regularly happening, I made it a bug report now. If anyone with a Bug Tracker account could vote for it there too, that would be nice.
True for the file, I was thinking more generally for the entire feature, it is not called “auto save file” everywhere in the UI and mostly just “auto save”. The UI changes (and in the manual) are much more important than just how the file is called, but both is needed of course.
The save aspect is what confusing people so I thought if we say it is a recovery file then it will be more clear. Save is something the user themselves should do.
